Candling turkey and duck eggs in a homemade kerosene lantern incubator

Pics
Fields Mountain Farm here are pictures of my guineas from a month ago. Please note, I have since sold all to those who wanted them for meat.
Lovely birds!
Thank you for the pics!
:love
littles are so much stronger then we give them credit for. A little high and they may hatch early ,,Low and they might hatch late. Low is always better then high if there is a choice . I have lost electric and eggs have gone cold for a full day. others have even longer and the little buggers still hatched out.
They are rather forgiving little creatures aren't they! :love

What does guinea meat taste like....'just like chicken'? :D
Is it common for them to be raised for meat there?
It has a gamey flavour and it has a nicer taste than chicken in my own opinion. Just some parts of the thigh and wing skin are dark. The darkness doesn't run into the meat. It is leaner than chicken but nowhere as dark as duck.

That's interesting. I may have to try one when I get some in spring.

Guinea fowl is more expensive than chicken in South West and South East Nigeria and unlike chicken, you can't go into a frozen meat store and buy portions of it. You have to buy a live bird at the market then kill and dress it yourself or pay someone to do that first you. I always pay to have them slaughter after buying. Then I marinate it for a few hours then grill. I also baste with a mixture of oil, and my special spice blend then it's good to eat. I don't eat chicken because it makes me feel nauseous. I only take turkey and guinea fowl and a bit of duck occasionally.

When I finally get to a point where I have one to butcher, if you are still here on BYC, I hope you'll give me pointers on cooking it! :fl:)

A lot of chicken is consumed here in Nigeria as well as turkey. We have our indigenous bantam breed of chickens but there is also old Issa Brow chickens slaughtered for meat and broilers. Most people don't have access to other poultry in portions and I aim to remedy that.
That's really awesome! I hope very much that you are successful!

Sure I will. You can use any chicken recipe for it. Just follow the recipe and substitute the chicken with guinea fowl. I still have 3 guineas left. I will be killing one on Friday. I will post pictures of how it looks like raw and the finished product. You will see how easy it is to differentiate between chicken and guinea fowl meat.
