Do you have to have a candler to hatch eggs, because I was just going to let one of my hens hatch it herself?

Nope, candling refers to holding a light to the egg to see development. A hen can do it all by herself. Candling is for us hatch nuts that can't seem to leave them be in the bator.

I'm new to all this stuff and I want to know what is the bator?

Oh sorry!!! Incubator. This forum is for those of us trying to figure out how to hatch with an incubator, if a hen is doing a good job hatching, etc.

And not all candlers are equal, so I am told. I never thought I would buy one, thinking a flashlight to be sufficient, but I am told that a decent candler allows you to also see embryos moving so you can discard dead ones quicker and not risk contamination of the incubator.
