Canker

Has anyone had an experience with this they can share? I have a rooster I think has it.

I've never had chickens that had it but I know it is highly contageous and deadly to the flock. You can order medication for it on firststatevetsupply.com or the randallburkey.com site.

Maybe your feedstore has something they can offer. Because of the holiday if you order meds online you probably won't get them until mid next week.

You could try swabbing with VetRX and making sure he gets 2 drops of Poly Vi Sol baby vitamins WITHOUT IRON, twice a day to keep his immune system functioning correctly. Make sure he eats even if it is treats. Watermelon will help him get fluids and some nutrition. A wet mash made with his food and Gatorade could also help. If he has canker his mouth and throat will hurt and he won't eat.

Thank you I have already been talking to Peter Brown about it, and he has been advising me, I just was curious to see if anyone elsehad had it. He didn't mention the contagious part; I did read an article that said that it could be, but this rooster has been slightly ill for weeks and no one else has contracted it; also, you can't see anything unusual in his mouth or throat. PB thought maybe it was further down and not visible. I had been treating him with antibiotics, to which he responded, but as soon as I took him off them his syptoms would worsen. Now we are treating him with a medication to treat the protozoa, if, in fact, he does have canker.And he seems to be responding to that, too! His main problem is that he can't swallow very well, but, other than that, he has no symptoms, except slightly watery eyes sometimes. The swallowing problem gets worse to the point he becomes depressed, if left untreated. I was hoping to compare his symtoms and treatment to someone else's. I have dewormed him twice this year and he appears to be in excellent health otherwise; he crows, chases hens, eats voraciously (except when the condition is bad); runs all day and roosts high in the rafters, except, once again, when the condition is worse; his feathers are shiny, although he's molting right now. Droppings are normal. He is only 1.5 years old. If I moisten his food with applesauce, scrambled egg, or yogurt, or cottage cheese, anything like that; he seems to be able to swallow much better, I suppose that would make sense.
