CANNOT catch the raccoon!!

I used to have a pet raccoon and they absolutly love marshmallows or anything fishy.
If you know anyone who traps as a hobby, they would probably be the one to talk to. Trappers know how to outsmart some animals.

This used to work but much of if not all antifreeze has been reformulated for newer cars with aluminum radiators and engine blocks and is now less toxic.. You never mixed it with food, they would drink it because it was sweet. Also it doesn't always or only get the target animal but any cat or dog or bird that drank it. I view this and many other posts on this thread as uninformed and obvious that they many have not trapped anything ever. The last 2 posts are knowledgeable as are some others.

Lol not sure why the attack on being "uninformative" and "that they many have not trapped anything ever" is necessary in your post. I thought this was a forum to help one another. As OP stated that this raccoon had killed her whole flock. I know if any animal kills/harms my flock im not gonna trap and release somewhere else. Im goin for the kill (but hey that says alot about both of us). Now like I said in my post that "someone had told me" which is pretty much stating beforehand my limited knowledge of how the antifeeeze works. No need to point out how "uninformative" this is. But thanks for sharing your knowledge on it (no sarcasim). And im pretty sure that anyone who sets something like this up is smart enough to put it where they're own pets cant have access to it. Whatever animal goes and drinks from my property after it gets dark is going to be assumed by me as a predator. Not worried about random cats and dogs or any other creature tbh.

I have another post in this forum going about trapping coons. I have been getting them in empty traps. I think the trick that is working for me is having blood on the trap from the previous varmints I dispatched and let bleed inside the trap. Of course this only works if you have a varmint to dispatch and start off the whole process. I'm not positive this is what's getting them to go inside the trap, but it's the only thing I can come up with. I have gotten 3 coons in under 2 weeks.

We always lock up our birds at night and let them out in the morning as a part of our standards of practice
to prevent such things from happening.

Go to Tractor Supply and get a trap.
They are very simple to utilize.

Place the trap in what appears to be the raccoons normal path or point of
entry and you can bait it with several different items...cat or dog food seem to have always
worked well....but there are many things they will eat.

The coons are smart and pretty strong so place something on top of the trap
to prevent them from tipping it over or dragging it around to spill out the food.
They sometimes are trickier than you would think and can foil your plan by dumping
the food (bait) from the trap and eating it right next to where you planned on catching
them.

BE CAREFUL....when releasing the animal so that it doesn't come back on you.
Usually relocating them to an area next to a creek is good. Get the opening end
of your trap pretty close to and facing towards the wood line and when you release
them, they will usually go straight into the woods to get away from you.

NOTE: Our experience has been that when you catch one....there are others that
also run the same route at different time of the night. So when you catch your first
one...you'll want to reset the trap the next evening also until you stop catching them.

Warning !!!!!!!! Opossums and skunks also like the same bait and you should be careful
of the possibilities of catching other animals when you set a trap for a particular species.

You may even catch the neighbors cat or dog.

Good luck with your situation.

^^^^^^

Better yet....don't release it. Dispatch those nasty varmints! By releasing them you may end up feeding them or like to make your problems someone elses.

A little late to the party, but I just wanted to chime in on the convo to let you all know that the "Coke of Death" cocktail is no myth. Tried to go the humane "trap and call animal control" method, but they got tired of coming out and now say they aren't picking up 'coons unless they're in the house... lazy, chickenish beaurocrats.

Anyway, I can't shoot in the city limits, and probably shouldn't be running a compounding shoppe out of my garage, either, but if its between some 'coons and my babies - guess who gets the short end? That said, I ordered a can of the Golden Malrin online and filled the bottom of a 8" cake pan with it. Poured c. 10oz. Pepsi on top and put it along my fenceline at 9pm. I checked the backyard at 10:30 before I went to bed, and there were 3 of them lying no more than 2' from the pan. I don.t anticipate finding anymore by morning, but I just wanted to let you guys know there IS a viable option - chalk one up for the 'net!

scbatz33, I want to thank you for the marshmallow suggestion. We caught the same raccoon twice with them! We attached a small can to the bottom of a havahart trap, filled it with marshmallows, and now two times its worked like a charm. Must be like heroin for raccoons! We didn't take the raccoon far enough away from our home the first time. We won't make that mistake the second time.

I've put my two dogs in my coop at night. (My coop is 20x20 feet) that seems to deter the raccoons. I alternate what nights they go in. Haven't had a raccoon problem in a long time.
