Can't remove the pasty butt!

I soak their bottoms in a dish of warm water and gently use a wet washcloth to wipe it. Mine seem to enjoy the warm water actually. They don't like me touching their bottoms but they do like the water on their butt lol I just dip and wipe then redip and wipe some more. Takes a few tries.

when we had the dreded pasty butt, we just kept wiping with a towel and plenty of warm water. I didn't rub very hard and always had water just dripping from my towel. it took a little while but it came off. I don't think leaving it is a good ideal. we had to clean one chick twice but now she is doing fine. we did several things we learned from this site. feed them some yogart and got some building sand from my neighbor and put that in the pen. that has seemed to do the trick. oh we did put a little olive oil on her little butt with a q-tip, that helped too.

I had the same problem with a little Cochin that I was raising recently. He sure didn't like it, but the most effective way I've found is to soak the rear for a few minutes. They'll squall up a storm, but just keep em there and give em a gentle dabbing with a wet towel after a minute or two.

I like the word tushie also. If you are still have pasty tush problems I have a solution for you. Don't know how it works but it's never failed me. I forgot to look to see what part of the country you are in but you can figure this out.

Find an area of lawn that has never had pesticides, fertilizers or herbicides sprayed on it. Dig up a 6 inch circle grass and dirt included and put it on a plastic lid (water seepage) and put it in the brooder. The chicks will peck in it, walk through it and play king of the mountain on it. Somehow the pasty tush goes away.

This is a really good time to sprinkle chick grit on their food in case they ingest something with fiber that way they can break it down and pass it.

Let me know how it works out for you.

Poo stuck to their bums isn't always the same as pasty butt. Poo sometimes gets stuck to the fluff just below their vents but unless it's actually blocking up their vent completely so that no other poo can get past, it's just some stuck on poo. Pasty butt is really dangerous, stuck on poo is just unsightly. If mine just have some stuck on poo, it's usually more trouble thasn its worth to try and remove it...

A lil peroxide breaks the poop up and its less stressful them holding the chick in water. Just pour a lil on the butt and let them sit for a minute and try to wipe away with tissue works great sometimes you have to do it twice..Just let the peroxide break it down.. I think this works well on silkies especially the lil fluffy butts. Hope this helps
