Can't wait to start hatching soon! Anyone else with 10/14 hatch day?

Well, it is day 7 today so we candled our 15 lavender ameraucana eggs (bantam) Due to shipping and incubator problems we only have 3 viable eggs. There were 4 bloodrings and the rest were clear. The kids were really disappointed (so am I) - really hoping these three make it! I need to find some bantam eggs close by - thinking of putting a few more in the bator so we get a few more chicks... I just can't afford to waste another $35 bucks on eggs that may well not make it. This is the first hatch that I have had so few surviving - but then I have had some horrid incubator troubles in the first few days. Ended up having to move the eggs to a different bator which seems to be much more stable. Not sure what to do ... odds are good that not all of these eggs are going to hatch...don't want to end up with just one to add to our two hens - hard to get a new one integrated especially when they are the minority! I had been holding out hope that Cleopatra would decide to go broody again but she has instead opted for a major moult! No way she'll be laying for weeks never mind going broody! I had really hoped to increase our numbers for the winter - guess we'll see what happens. Here's hoping the remaining three eggs make it!

I have hatched 2 Silkie mixes and I have 2 Silkie eggs in my bator now. They are easier to see b/c of the egg shell color and they are VERY active when candling!

Great thanks.

Candled tonight. Out of 27 silkies I took out 15. That leaves me with 12 still in the bator. I also took out 1 lavender Orpington. Leaves me with 9. The rest in the bator are either good or too hard to tell. I much prefer the white shelled leghorns for candling purposes

I don't see how you candle darker eggs. I even have a super powerful flashlight and still I'm just guessing on most. Oh well I will leave the rest until day 14. Then I'll candle again and remove quitters if I can tell them otherwise they'll all go to lock down.

Ouch! I came pretty close today when I was trying to get my water wiggler unjammed from between the two racks of the turner!

I guess I was disappointed last night when I went to bed because I dreamt that only one of my eggs hatched and it was a Silky Orpington - HAHAHA! That thing was huge and had the silky feathers. I am just so hoping we end up with more then only one hatch. I remember when the WLs hatched and we were worried we wouldn't get any - then 6 actually hatched. Last time we were hopeful and out of our mixed batch only 1 hatched.
