The tools that I used are a scalpel, forceps, spreaders and a sharp pick like tool with a small 90 deg bend at the end. The pick tool is good for moving / breaking membranes without cutting into any intestins. If you have stuff and they work I would give it a try. I also used string with "S" hooks to retain the rooster. I used tautline hitches to make the strings adjustable.

I also did not use the spreaders until the very end. While looking for the gland I found that the forceps work better as spreaders. As soon as I found the gland I then used the spreaders and removed the gland with the forceps. The gland easily fit into the triangular hole in the end of the forceps. The cords also broke long before I had a chance to cut them.

As far as the crowing I think that would be a sign that something was left behind that should not have been.

Thank you for the information. I've been interested in this since I was a kid. My uncle used to take his somewhere and ha ve a big batch done.
One other question do you cut back the feathers at the site?
Thanks

I wanted to post my spreader modifications just in case anybody finds it useful.
