Col smirked as Linden obeyed. Merek mumbled something to himself as he followed Col and Linden down the steps.

Once at the bottom, Merek took the lead. "This way," he said, voice rather emotionless. He seemed a little older than most of the bandits and wasn't fond of this whole prisoner business. It complicated matters too much. Should have just had it out with the caravan guard then and there as soon as they'd found him with his sword in Rorik's belly. But now that the man was bound, it was a little late for returning that favor.

A narrow tunnel sloped slightly downhill, lit only by an occasional torch, led them about 30 feet before it branched. Most of the bandits carrying stolen goods from the wagon took the left tunnel, but Merek and Col directed Linden down the right one. Col grabbed one of the torches from the wall, for this way was unlit. The tunnel was wide enough and tall enough that even Linden could move without fear of striking his head.

Another 20 feet down the tunnel was "the Pit". "You first," Merek said to Linden, sword still in his hand. If the caravan guard fell down the hole on his own, it would certainly save them some trouble of pushing him down there. Merek had yet to see a captive go willingly into that dark hole.

Mavis was surprised that Karin would admit her betrayal so openly to Brylla, who up until this point probably thought that he was Karin's prisoner and they were on their way to the base anyways. He caught her warning glance and kept his mouth shut though, waiting to see how Brylla reacted.

Karin glanced at him again.

Brylla's head was still throbbing from the blow Terrick had given her and she blinked a few times as she processed what Karin had just told her.  "Who told you to take him back?" she asked, trying not to accuse the girl of anything prematurely, but her voice held a slightly accusatory edge.  "Has he been to our camp?"

"I did. He hasnt been to base.. He..He has a family unlike me. I dont want to take him away from them." Karin brush some hair out of her eyes beforing continuing. "Brylla.. If you go back to base.. Tell Tianea where i am.. Okay?"

Tianea went in her room and close the door. Her room was a large cavern with large branchs all around. Light came from torchs mounted on the wall. But instead of a bed she had a nest in a smaller round cave off to the side. She sat down on a brancch and had to process everything that had happened.

Brylla was stunned and felt her cheeks grow flush with anger. How could Karin show so much disrespect to the group that had taken care of her all these years? "Unlike you?" she asked, her voice slightly louder than she even realized. "We're your family Karin! Me, Rook and Merek, Tianea... and Rorik. You really want to throw that away?" She paused, unsure what to say to persuade the girl around to her way of thinking. "Get the kid and bring him. I won't breathe a word of this to anyone if you bring him back to the base now."

Linden plodded reluctantly after them. As the smell of fresh air began to diminish once they got deeper into the cave, his stomach began to roil and knot with nerves. Were they just going to dump him down there to rot? He almost wished that they would just get it over with if that was the case. His stomach rumbled, it had been awhile since he had eaten. The only consolation, he supposed, was that the tunnel was large enough for him to fit through without difficulty. He recalled an occasion where the guards had been forced to take shelter in a cave during a heavy downpour on one of their trips. Thankfully, this cave was much larger.

Once they neared the pit and Merek commanded him to go first, Linden hesitated. He looked at the bandit, then down the tunnel towards the pit, then back at Merek. "You know, this is such a beautiful cave that you have here, I'd hate to mess it up and get it all bloody if I tripped." He protested in a partially sarcastic voice, trying to take his mind off the situation, and stall as much as he could. "Why don't I take the torch," he gestured to Col. "Just to make sure I get there safely."

That is when karin snapped. Her only friend in this world was now yelling at her. Telling her she was doing wrong. Telling her she couldnt. Threatening her. Everything karin had ever known was beiing pelted at her. All the threats. The lies. Everything! "You! You! You have no rightto tell me what to do! I dont care how old you i are. I am me! I cannot. No.. I willnot obey you! Rorik is dead tianea is unwell Rook Merek Algar? I hardly like them! Brylla try as you might. Say whatever you want but i refuse. Refuse to listen!" She shouted she didnt care who heard. She was not going to let these people control her. Grabbing mavis's arm she stormed off.

While they were arguing, Mavis took another few steps away from them. He knew the chances of him being able to outrun both girls were slim, especially since he was unfamiliar with the territory, but if he didn't try he might not have another chance to escape. With the decision made in his mind, he turned around and bolted into the trees. His plan was to run until he could find somewhere to hide, his only advantage being that he was smaller than both of the bandits. If he was lucky, he might be able to find somewhere to conceal himself before they caught him, and wait until they had given up on catching him.

Sorry ChickenRadio, you posted before I was finished. Slow typer

Since they were still arguing, and Mavis did have ample time to make a getaway, could we still say that he ran?

"Want me to leave it here for you?" Col replied, in a mocking baby voice. "So you don't have to be scared of the dark?"

He held the torch closer to the pit, illuminating a gaping hole about 5 feet across and almost 10 feet wide. There was a length of heavy rope coiled at the edge, one end tied securely to a heavy hook that had been affixed to the rock. "Looks cozy, huh?" Col said, glancing down. In reality, the pit was only about 10' deep, but the dancing torchlight did not illuminate the bottom, giving it the illusion of being bottomless.

Merek tossed the end of the rope over the edge to give Linden a way to lower himself down. "Easy way or hard way?" he asked, voice still as carefully emotionless as ever.
