Col smirked as Linden obeyed. Merek mumbled something to himself as he followed Col and Linden down the steps.
Once at the bottom, Merek took the lead. "This way," he said, voice rather emotionless. He seemed a little older than most of the bandits and wasn't fond of this whole prisoner business. It complicated matters too much. Should have just had it out with the caravan guard then and there as soon as they'd found him with his sword in Rorik's belly. But now that the man was bound, it was a little late for returning that favor.
A narrow tunnel sloped slightly downhill, lit only by an occasional torch, led them about 30 feet before it branched. Most of the bandits carrying stolen goods from the wagon took the left tunnel, but Merek and Col directed Linden down the right one. Col grabbed one of the torches from the wall, for this way was unlit. The tunnel was wide enough and tall enough that even Linden could move without fear of striking his head.
Another 20 feet down the tunnel was "the Pit". "You first," Merek said to Linden, sword still in his hand. If the caravan guard fell down the hole on his own, it would certainly save them some trouble of pushing him down there. Merek had yet to see a captive go willingly into that dark hole.
