Carpet in Coop?

I have an old piece of carpet and was wondering if I could use it in the coop, underneath the pine shavings. The coop floor (4x6) is glassboard and VERY slippery. My intention is too use something (not sand tho) to keep the girls from sliding on take off to the roosting platform or sliding when jumping off the platform.

Any thoughts? I could cut the piece to fit. Seems like I could just pull the whole thing out the people door to do a complete cleaning. Ummm.............

Sorry, that doesn't sound like a good choice to me. The carpet would be impossible to really clean and the chickens might eat the fibers. Could you possibly roughen the floor with sandpaper? Or maybe top it with thin plywood?

Not to mention the carpet would be a great breeding ground for pest such as mites!

You could give the chickens little chicken vacuum cleaners.

How about the non-slip rubber mats? You can buy them at home depot. They are designed for putting on garage floors. You can cut them to size.

Hummmmm............I hadn't considered the fact that they might EAT the rug......

But your right they probably would.

Thank God for BYC, otherwise I would end up doing some really stupid things....

What if the depth of the shavings was deeper? I don't really want to put a piece of plywood over the glassboard, it defeats the purpose of the glassboard----then again I suppose carpet does too.

Anything else that can keep them from doing the slide?

Mats are a good idea, and so is plywood. But do also read up on deep litter method, which many of use to great success.

I am an avid promotor of DLM. In the large coop (30x20) this is the method of choice for us. But with this itsy bitsy coop, (comparatively speaking

) it just isn't practical although we go as deep as we can, without the floor being the same height as the roost. LOL!

How about that cheap rubbery stuff they sell for the inside of kitchen drawers?
I use a piece of linoleum with a wood grain pattern. It cleans easily and it is not too slippery. I don't use any pine shavings because Nugget eats them. I just scrape out the poo every morning and throw it into the compost pile. I can fold it like a taco to dump it into the wheelbarrow or to remove it to hose it off.

Scrap sections of vinyl floor from menards? Stick it down with "super 77" spray adhesive and you can peel it up easy later for application of a new sheet. Those self stick tiles will work too, but the edges may curl after a while.
