Hi everyone! My name is Kelsey and I purchased a young pair of seramas from Laura last summer, finally named Boots & Buttercup. Buttercup started laying recently (fertile eggs!) so I decided I wanted to try my hand at hatching. I ordered a Brinsea mini and some eggs from Mimi's Place (Carla Cole in Oklahoma). The incubator's been calibrated and seems to hold temperature just fine in my bedroom but I have it on my desk by a window. It's a west-facing window and hardly gets any direct sunlight because of trees & a hill, especially now in the winter when all we seem to have is rain (western Oregon). It's a new window too so it keeps the cold out and the desk sits a few inches below the window. I've got it pulled a good foot or so away from the window. Is this ok or should I try to find a better location? I have 6 nieces and nephews and a huge extended family so I don't really feel comfortable putting the incubator in any other room of the house... the family's here a lot. The only other spot I've thought of is my closet, but it seems sad to put them there in the dark.

One other question I had is if it's okay to put that grippy shelf liner in the incubator over the hard yellow plastic floor. I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't affect moisture levels too much or have some other adverse effect. Just seems like it would hold the eggs in place a little better and be good for the chicks to try to stand on if/when they hatch.

I've done all the research I can do and feel as prepared for this as I possibly can, but it's my first time hatching and I'm nervous! A few of these eggs, if they hatch, will be grandbabies to Laura's birds so I felt okay posting here

Hope that's okay with everyone else. I'm expecting Carla's eggs Wednesday or possibly Thursday... I'll post an update then. And I'll get some pictures of Boots & Buttercup in the meantime.

Good luck on your upcoming hatch!!! The first one is always exciting and nerve wracking! Personally, I wouldn't put it by the window unless you cover the window. I had mine by a window in the pantry (the only really safe place at that time) but I covered the window. It was also west facing. I know lots of people who incubate in closets. I think the most important part is a place that has a steady temp. Fluctuations are hard on the process even with a Brinsea. And they can't see that it is dark

The other good thing about the closet...easy to candle in the dark!!

Laura, The little chick that hatched from Zephyr egg is not doing so well and I worried if you had any issues with this: It eats and drinks because I see it doing it but it is lite as a feather almost like it is not gaining any weight. All the others are 3 times as big and heavy. It peeps alot and it wants to sleep on it's back. If I pick it up it just lays there and closes it's eyes. I thought 3 days ago I would wake up and it be dead but it is still going. I don't know how to help it and I worry it will not make it because it is not gaining weight. Any help would be great. Thanks

Donna, give it poly-vi-sol (no iron) vitamins, 3 drops per day for a week. Also make sure the food is small enough for it. Vitamins in the water help too. I always use them. Sometimes these little ones need extra help.

I moved the incubator to the closet this morning and both my thermometers have been consistently giving me the same reading for the past few hours. Woo! Thanks, Laura

If they continue to read 100.0, should I turn it down a bit to be closer to 99.5? I plan to set the eggs tomorrow evening.
