I worked in labs; every day was casual, often covered by a well used and stained lab coat. You don't wear nice clothes when working with chemicals, or animal products.
Dh is a programmer. He started in a university environment, went to a couple of start-ups and then larger companies. All were quite casual. When his company laid everyone off, he ended up at IBM. At one of their family meetings for new hires they were talking about casual Friday and how you could wear "dungarees" on Fridays. This was one of the first times IBM had done a large number of professional hires, their culture was to hire people straight out of college and bring them up in the corporate culture. Dh and I smirked at each other and had a good laugh after the meeting. Casual Friday was about to bite the dust, and casual everyday make its appearance. Dh is back at IBM after eight years at Sun. He's never worn a tie to work (unless maybe meeting customers or a big wig), and often wears shorts and sandals.
