CAT WITH GAPING HOLE IN HIS EAR!! HELP

Hydrogen peroxide is used to clean an abscess. It's unclear if this cat has an abscess or a hematoma, so a vet is best for the correct course of action to treat the cat properly.

Not anymore

"Use of hydrogen peroxide to flush abscesses. ... Due to its weak disinfectant and antiseptic properties, hydrogen peroxide as a 3% solution was often used to treat cat fight abscesses. However, it has fallen out of favour because it slows healing by affecting tissue growth through several possible factors."

Sorry, it's still used here for abscesses. I'm gonna do what my vet recommends and tells me to do.

It is absolutely not supposed to be used. Some say you can use it one time as the initial cleaning if there are absolutely no other options.

Stick with the warm water and mild soap until a vet can be seen. I was a vet tech for many years, I or the vets I worked with would never recommend it.

Sorry but I respectfully disagree. We will leave it alone in the forums and get back on topic.

That is fine, but recommending something on the Internet before it's seen by a vet is very dangerous.

The best thing to use for wounds is collodial silver. I have used it on myself for dog bites and wounds on any animals, works phenomenally.

You will not get anything that will clean and act as an anti biotic on wounds thrn colloidial silver.

"Colloidal silver is not only a powerful bacteria-fighting agent. Several studies have revealed that colloidal silver is also a great antiseptic that works to heal cuts, abrasions, and wounds. It helps the skin develop its healthiest form without destroying tissue cells."

I never recommended anything. I recommended taking it to a vet for proper care.

I just clarified that hydrogen peroxide is still used here for abscesses on the instructions of my vet that I trust. I don't recommend anyone following veterinarian internet advice no matter who's giving it out.

Don't stress. If it's possible to keep your cat quiet and contained, that would be good. As others have said, it may very well be infected. A vet will clean it properly, bandage it if needed, and likely give a course of oral antibiotics. None of these things are particularly costly in terms of vet care. Animals can also get the equivalent of cauliflower ear that people get from trauma to the ear which causes quite a bit of swelling. If this is the case it will keep coming back if not treated by a vet. The vet will drain it and inject it with a steroid so it does not swell again. This also is not an expensive procedure and does not generally require sedation or anything. Don't worry your kitty should be just fine :hugs and I really don't think it will cost you too much.
