catching chickens

taking them off the roost is the easiest way, catch them first thing in the morning before you let them out.
My great grandmother (she was probably 85 or so) would go in at night take them off the roost, then tie their feet together with butchers string and lay them on the floor of the coop. This way in the morning after the water was boiling and she had several cups of coffee she would walk in and the chickens were very easy to catch.

Only kidding. I don't even try to run after mine. But I do use a fat max 25 ft tape measure that I extend out to the length I need to herd them into a good spot to catch them.

Agreed with the others, chasing them is pretty useless.

Wait till after dark, or move slow and get your chickens so used to you that they don't think of you as a threat and you can just pick them up.

Otherwise, if it's an emergency catch, get a net.

No need to chase them.

Get a wire coat hanger, unwind it.
Bend the hook in until it's about an inch and 1/2 across.
Put a bend in one foot up so it looks like a long golf club, only useful.
Walk toward smug chicken, who is certain that it can outrun you.
Swing hook in from the side and catch a leg.
Watch previously smug chicken discover that it is caught.

if it's one of my bantam oeg's i walk over and pick it up [show birds, friendly but waaay too needy] if i'm trying to catch someone else's birds i can usualy get em in a minute or so, i have a knack for it, if i'm trying to catch a cornish cross i walk over, watch it fruitlessly try to walk away and grab it by the legs.
