Cats And Chickens

Last fall a cat killed two of my NH Reds, big full grow hens about 3 yrs old. My own cat doesn't bother my hens. The cat that killed my hens didn't even eat them, killed they for fun, instinct, whatever.I shot the cat with a pellet gun, never saw cat again, no more hen losses...No cat you don't personally know( and some you do know) can be trusted around hens, some kill for fun, some for food, some don't kill hens....

Mr. Mo is always interested in watching them but keeps his distance. I've seen him napping in the sunshine, surrounded by chickens. Sometimes the chickens like to try to see if he is yummy and Mo has to go and hide in the house. Or on someone's lap....

He's the sweetest boy...except if something invades his territory. Then he chases them out. I've seen him chase deer out of the yard. He accepts the chickens and I suspect even enjoys their company when he's in the mood and the chicken are behaving.

Oh, I like MO!

We had gotten a kitten last spring. Cute little fella. A few months later I found her perching on the chicken fence rail. Ok, no problems. A few days later IN the run. A few days later I hear a huge commotion IN the coop. Cat had cornered a broody. (We have bantams) She had gone on the coop through the small chicken door. I gave that kitten poop and set her on her way. A few days later same commotion. But this time my huge buff orp roo had cornered the kitten. Kitten was rehomed the next day.

Our other full grown geriatric cat sneaks in the run when the chickens are locked up to steal some leftovers, but otherwise stays away.

Even my feral cats are terrified of our chickens and I think the turkeys may have taken one or two of their nine lives off them. The inside cats are even afraid of the baby chicks but I think they've actually figured out that the cute little, helpless fuzzies turn into ugly, scary raptors who chase them. I did have a fuzzy butt disappear from the brooder and I suspect the feral cats but that only happened once.

One of the funniest things I think I've ever seen was when my trio of very young Bourbon hens decided that one of the feral cats NEEDED to be investigated and they chased that poor kitty all over this yard and pasture trying to get a taste of him.
