I don't think it's a question of the effectiveness of the weapon - she lives right outside of NYC! I don't think she's allowed to shoot weapons of that calibur in her backyard.

You can kill an oppussum with a shotgun loaded with bird shot. And drowning an animal is not easier on the animal. The poor thing fighting to get out of the trap while water is filling its lungs.

well having almost drowned myself (needed cpr) as a child I rememer uiet well what it was like. It was very scary for about 30 seconds (felt like longer though) then it was no longer scary i though oh well guess this is it (was only 10 years old at the time) and quiet contently tumbled through the waves until I passed out I think.

Look I dont want to kill anything. My list of weapons although all legal consist of AK47, Mossberg, Rem. 700, AR15 BM, and an old pig sticker bayonett (sp?)

I know my shot gun (I regularly go to the range or used to anyway) and it is way to loud.

how far to possums travel?

No animal control I cant even think of bringing them to my home or I will be inviting trouble.

And YES I AM gonna move to a farm as soon as my MIL and FIL are done suing the crud out of me.

I don't think OP started this thread to begin a debate as to how to kill the opossum, just whether or not they should. And yes, you should. Don't relocate it for all the reasons listed previously. An opossum will kill your birds, steal your eggs, and eat your feed. I just wouldn't mention it here if you do decide to drown it....

Do not relocate. If you live in NY it IS illegal. It is also immoral and unethical. Drown the thing and be done with it.

If it was a "cute little thing" it must have been a young one, because the adults are niether cute or little. You did the right thing. We had a huge male possum in our garage earlier this spring. Even my dog - a 90-lb lab who will tackle a full-grown coon without hesitation - didn't want to take it on!

As with all wildlife it is illegal to relocate raccoons to any area other than the property it was caught on.

If you catch, kill it.
If you kill it, eat it, I always say.
