Caught him in trap - first try!

Hey, why release/rehome, it's BBQ season. Raccoons are good on the Barbie------don't knock it if you haven’t tried it.

If you only moved it 6 miles, it probably got home before you did, and now it is trap smart. It is very unlikely that you will be able to trap it again. Depending upon where you live in NJ rabies is endemic if not epidemic among raccoons.

::sigh::

I set the trap again to catch one of it's family members. Half of a delicious and sweet peach, peanut butter and chicken crumbles.

Let's see if I have the same luck on the second night that I had on the first. If I do - then I think we're a little screwed. This would mean that the population was worse than I assumed, no?

I'll call animal control and ask some questions. I certainly don't want them around. My BF said to drown it, but that sounds worse than shooting it with something. We have a bow and arrow, which I think is legal for us to dispatch here. I don't know if we're allowed to post detailed killing methods here. If so - how do we kill it the most "humane" way possible? If you aren't comfortable posting it - please PM me!

I wish they were uglier. I'm sure I'd be more irritated if one of my chickens was actually hurt. I don't want to even think about that!

jersey kills them just most traps are not allowed snare and cages to my knowledge fur bearers have a season though most localities allow for homeowners to protect their property normally this tiome of the year there are 2 and a coupla little ones half the time when one is relocated the little ones starve if they are not big enough to fend for themselves

Drowning is certainly not going to happen in this household - even if it were legal. I'm simply not cool with that idea. I need to figure something out, though.

We never really had a problem with the raccoons. Now that I have chickens - it's a different game.

The only other time we even knew the raccoons were here is when they were knocking over the feed bins in the barn and eating the horses sweetfeed. We trapped a couple and it was the end of that.

There was a woman who lived near us who would do something with them. To our knowledge, she worked for the state. Licensed rehabber? Who knows. She passed away and now we're left to figure out what to do next.

I know the theory on rehoming them is someone elses problem - but what am I supposed to do if I'm not "allowed" to kill them here? Kill them quietly? I didn't release it in a populated area.

You're "not allowed" to relocate them either

Rules on relocating wildlife:

What most people do is kill the animal and don't talk a lot about it.

Relocating is illegal without a LOT of dealing with regulations, and just puts the problems on someone else

Thank you for that link. It explains more about why relocating is a bad idea other than the "putting problems on someone else." There's a greater biological impact that I wasn't considering.

I'm going to contact my animal control tomorrow and ask what the laws are about euthanizing them.

don't do what I did one time. I shot the varmit in my trap and it jumped around so bad it broke the spring in my hav a heart trap and I had to go out and buy a new one...ughhhhhh..
