Cause of sudden onset bright green poop, slightly decreased appetite? (1 yo Polish hen)

Such a great article, thank you!!!

I opted for the gentle massage first last night before they went in. Immediately his energy perked up and had interest in his surroundings. He squealed a bit when I was trying to break up the “bulge” in there. Drank some water and was fine.This morning I went to feel his crop and it felt empty and much much better than yesterday. I have coconut oil ready if this persists. If his droppings do not improve, is there anything else to look out for?

Behavior is your best indicator of well being. You may give him a probioric tablet for several days to elevate the good microbes in his digestive system. I get acidophillus from where they sell people vitamins. Making certain he has grit is also important. But do continue to check his crop each morning for the next several days.

Update. We decided to do probiotics via water instead of a direct tablet. He is still spending more time in the coop than usual and still has the same kind of poop going on. Everything else seems fine but I’m kinda stumped as to what could be causing it. I’m of course worried he’s going to suddenly go down hill but this behavior and poop have been going on for over a month now… crop doesn’t seem to be an issue either.

@azygous @Wyorp Rock

For runny poop when there are no other symptoms, often boiled rice smothered in buttermilk, yogurt or keifer will help firm up poop. All chickens love it. Mine just got a bowl of rice and keifer they fought over to help firm up the runny poop of several days running.

Aww! That's so sad! It looks like leprechaun poop, or that's local slang we call it in the projects. Are there any roosters in your flock?
@azygous This is from my Roo. It’s solid but not “normal” by any means. Very much leprechaun poop. Everything I’ve read is mostly geared towards “runny green poop” etc. He is the only one having this issue. He is eating and drinking. He’s a 3 year old Faverolle. He is aloof at his baseline, but seemingly more unbothered which is why I’m worried. I could try the rice smothered in buttermilk or kefir like you’re saying, but he doesn’t have the runs by any means. Kinda the opposite.

The issue is skimpy green poop, then. A crop issue could cause this. Green bile in poop indicates starvation. Tiny, dry poop means there could be a blockage, either in his crop or farther down in the gizzard.

Have you inspected his crop to decide if there is a crop issue needing treatment? https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...w-to-know-which-one-youre-dealing-with.73607/
I have tried and haven’t felt anything since the first time. If it’s down in the gizzard, is there anything that can be done? Maybe I’m not feeling in the right place to know? That article is very helpful. Wish I had someone with me to help assess the situation in person as this is my first encounter with anything like this that has persisted..

Okay just checked again.. definitely felt further down this time and there’s “mushy stuff” that I can feel further down. Definitely probably back into the possibility of impacted crop. No smells so I don’t think it’s sour. He did just eat some though. Is it best to withhold food and separate him? And then start with coconut oil possibly? I’ll re-read the article as well.
