Okay, forgive me that I didn't read the other posts- gotta run...

What can you tell me about it? It's an issue with the little finger-like projectiles inside your intestines being damaged by gluten from wheat, rye, barley, some oats, and other grains. Not potato gluten, or rice protein.

What are the symptoms of it? The folks with symptoms are the lucky ones, because they know they have it. Those symptoms can range from mild diarrhea, headaches and nervousness, nausea, anxiety or aches to shedding the inner lining of your guts when you poop or passing lots of blood.

Is is a dangerous disease? It can be. It can lead to malnourishment, malabsorption and auto-immune disorders as well as either being severely thin or obese- each body reacts differently. The worst is that if your antibodies read above a 1 and you eat grains anyway, you are increasing your chances of GI cancer dramatically.

Can it affect your fertility? Yes, because of the auto-immune ramifications.

How do I know? Every member of my family has it except my father. My 2 younger sisters nearly died from malabsorption and bowel bleeding when my mom weaned them as toddlers, and the diagnosis led them to biopsy me and my older sister- we all ended up with it. My mom was tested years later via blood (huge advance over the biopsy!) and found she was symptomless. When she cut glutens out, she lost 30# extra weight, and her fibromyalgia, migraines and arthritis disappeared.

I am symptomless, but when I am faithfully gluten-free, I don't need my ADHD meds. Neato, huh?

I can tell you it's a heckuva lot easier now than it was 30 years ago when Mom had to find a mill to make rice flour to bake grainy horrible birthday cakes. Kinnikinnick Foods makes some sweet baked goods to die for!!

Good luck!
