Hello,
I have a half acre property in Central Florida and would like some backyard chickens just for eggs for my husband and I. We began a veggies garden last year and through a lot of trial and error we are now producing our groceries minus the meats. We feel in love with being self sufficient and decided that maybe it's time to have fresh eggs. We are 60 years young and looking for advise from the veteran BYC'ers to be prepared and well informed before jumping in.

Our County allows BYC with a permit. I'm going to begin that process next week. I'd love to know what breeds I should consider due to the Central Florida heat, wet season, and winter freeze dates. Not to mention I'm by a lake and we have lots of wild life so protecting my future girls is really important. We are animal lovers and want to be responsible chicken owners. We want them healthy and happy so I thought this would be a great place to learn,

Thank you in advance for any advice or tips you can share with us.

Welcome to BYC! A great place to learn more about chickens is the articles section of our forum! You can also stop by your state thread and ask them for suggestions, or make your own thread and see what the wonderful people of BYC come up with! Hope to see you around :welcome
