Chalky substance on egg

Also eggs from the grocery have been washed so I would gather anything on them has been washed off. That's why they have to be refrigerated. Once they've been washed the egg can get bacteria inside. Then refrigeration is it's only protection The bloom is gone. Anybody disagree?

I read somewhere that after commercial eggs are washed they are misted with a light coat of mineral oil to replicate the bloom and give a shine to the egg.

All I can really vouch for is some years back I use to go to a commercial egg farm to get our eggs. I would watch them carton them up. These were sprayed with water, and rather warm at that. They would still be damp when I left with um. If mineral oil was put on these I didn't see it.

I've read the same. The light mineral oil coating, or wash (you wouldn't particularly notice it--they don't use enough to make the egg oily) seals the egg shell pores and creates a barrier against bacteria, thus extending the shelf-life of the egg.

I watched Doomsday Preppers on NatGeo,
and there was someone one there who was
buying eggs, then rubbing them with mineral
oil for protection. Her quote, not verbatem was...
"Just like mama layed them"

Ok, My BCM eggs are form a new flock and most of the eggs are shinny and a dark chocolate color. However, a few are chalky and lighter in color. The chickens have only been laying for a couple months so this may be a new hen issue…that will become clearer as time goes by.
