Changing Sacramento laws (would like feedback on law language)

Please PM me. My DD loves silkies. I am not sure how many hens you have but I can take a few. I like black especially. If you want them back later you can just come pick them up?
Please let me know asap because I go tommorrow to pick up white silkie chicks.

Just a heads up, the new animal control director of sac city is an organization person [who are not known for encouraging birds], since they are saying they are responsible for spreading viruses etc etc. since the organization is not animal welfare based, they favor excessive regulation. We work with animal advocacy but not everyone knows about it [some blaming birds] Swine-avian-human or whatever they call it, some like to blame owners of birds. that would likely be an argument you will be hearing. And since new law for egg producers is to go back to the 1940's re methods of production, it is likely we will be looking at issues in how much "space" should be allotted in coops, and whether they are "ok"..... We possibly forsee attempted regulation even on small flock owners. This is because when eggs become too expensive, more people will want chickens. The current law just passed will not allow low income WIC recipients to buy any eggs at all. Starting fall 2009.

Thank you Stripey J-
This might explain the officer's actions. According to my neighbor, who was threatened with fines; the officer pushed for my neighbor to make a complaint against us (sour grapes?) but he didn't do so. I believe the officer will be back, so we are hopefully going to be able to find good homes for most of them before then.

Oops! I didn't notice people were posting on this thread! We did have a second chicken meeting on Wednesday in Sacramento and there will be another meeting in June to plan our strategy (there will be an email going out in a few days to schedule it). If you are interested in attending the June meeting please email [email protected] to get on the list.

That is good to know about the new animal control officer. We should have someone look into this.

It's actually not true that WIC participants won't get any eggs after September. They will get less eggs, but eggs aren't going away entirely (I work at WIC). But it sure would be better for them to have fresh, local eggs anyway!

I live in N.Sac, and we just had a code inforcement officer contact a neighbor- things are very low key here now.

I too would like to know and participate in this organization.

Yay! I am so glad this is moving forward! I have 4 laying hens currently, and will be getting 2 or so more this spring. My surrounding neighbors have all met my hens and they are all fine with it. I made sure to say if they ever had a problem with noise or anything to come talk to me and I will change what is happening. I would rather them talk to me and then I can take it from there and all my neighbors seem to agree!

Everybody loves them though, and the kids down the street are amazed to come over and collect eggs. Especially different shades

I think it's very educational for them, and I bet they would have never ever seen a chicken aside from at Safeway. Plus... Those eggs are unbeatable! My girls lay 2.1-2.2 ounce eggs nearly every day and they are RICH with goodness!

Fingers crossed for a easy pass into law to raise the chicken ban! And my girls are all crossing their toes

I was living in Elk Grove, and had 2 illegal stealth bantams. I moved out into the country because they just weren't doing it for me. I can keep as many as I want out here. My neighbors were begging me for my bantams since they were already laying! See converted a couple already. I think it is a bunch of crap. Did you all know the city ordinances say that you can keep a beehive but no chickens!

Now, to clarify, I will be starting a hive in April and bees are more or less harmless. But come on... so are chickens! I can't wait for the day that Sacramento people can keep a couple hens in their backyards. I mean we have chinchilas, let's not mention all the people who sneak sugar gliders and ferrets in from Nevada. Living in Elk Grove, I felt like I was doing something evil like dealing heroine or something. And we were talking about just 2 bantams.

I hope it comes soon.

Are any of you guys in league with CLUCK? Interested in attending a meeting. PM me.
