Chantecler Breeder and Owner Database Project

Blackhorsehill,

You are right to ask for clarification of purpose and whether there is anything official about this project.
I began this project as a personal project intending to offer the results of my efforts to Chantecler Fanciers International for the possible improvement and preservation of the breed. Shortly after starting I contacted Rare Breeds Canada and offer to collaborate with them on this. They also had started the same project but were focusing on the more traditional livestock community. I offered to take on the role as researcher on the internet. I offered to search the internet and all of the poultry forums. Once we have completed the database, as much as possible, it will be given to Rare Breeds Canada and Chantecler Fanciers International. The purpose is still the improvement and preservation of the breed. i have also been in discussion with CFI via our Yahoo group. One of the flocks in the database is that of our treasurer/secretary.

Here is something that I posted on another forum and have sent to some RBC members:
Good Evening Everyone,

I have begun collecting information regarding every flock of Chantecler that I can find. With the Chantecler being the only Canadian chicken breed and being rare, I thought that it was time for an updated database of existing flocks be created.

To this end I have begun posting open requests for owners and breeders of Chantecler to please send me information regarding their flocks. I have asked for information about what types (white, partridge, buff, red, black) they own. The number of male and female of each type. Information regarding the origin of each type. If they sell any, as well as any other relevant information they wish to add.

I have left it up to everyone to decide if they want to include their real name and location. Almost all of the communication I will be doing is over the internet. As such, privacy is a very important aspect of this communication. With that in mind I am willing to use only an alias if they wish.

As you may know Rare Breeds Canada is working on the same project. The current issue of Small Farms has a small article about this project. I am collaborating with RBC on this project. We are attempting to collect as much information about the current condition of the Chantecler in North America. My part in this is collecting information from the internet. To do this I am currently on many different poultry forums, and emailing people listed on websites.

The database that I create will be shared with Rare Breeds Canada and Chantecler Fanciers International for developing and improving the breeding programs of owners across North America. It will also be used to help with the estimation of breed numbers.

If you are willing to include any information regarding your flock please email the information to me. For those that sell Chantecler or plan to I wish to ask if you are willing to have your name, general location and contact information included in the database. This could be as little as an email if you wish.
Any and all information will be greatly appreciated.

I hope this helps.

I look forward to the information whenever it comes out, but am hoping it is sooner rather than later! I'm very happy you have undertaken this project. Last year when I was looking for large fowl Partridge Chanteclers it was quite a struggle. I did contact a member of the Chantecler Fanciers club who sent out a message to club members, but the only response I got was from someone who raised bantams. A list of flocks and breeders will be a great resource.

I wonder when you say "flocks" how many chickens does that require? Does it require both hens and roosters?

Thanks for taking on this project. Please excuse my apparent impatience, I can wait but wanted to also show my enthusiasm.

Tim

Tim,

The struggle to find breeders is one of the reasons that I began thinking about this project. I have had difficulty finding breeders that were close to me, and I have a lot of contacts compared to most. It is a big problem for all rare breeds. I will try to get the list to RBC and CFI as soon as possible. The sooner I can do that the better. Once that is done. We will have to figure out what kind of breeders list can then be made public.

As for the definition of "flock": a pair is a flock. A male and a female, of any age. I'm not being picky with this criteria. The more "flocks" the merrier.

Thank you for such great interest. It helps to keep the project going.

I finally found out what my boy is! He was the free exotic breed thrown in with an order of Australorpes. He's had personality since he arrived at 2 days old and I shipped off the Australorp Roos and kept him.
When he was a juvenile I sent some pics and others thought him to be a Golden Campine, but as he got older he never developed the golden neck and had a pillow type comb. His legs however are more grey than than the yellow I'm seeing on other Chanteclers. I need to send some good pictures to verify.

I live in Benton and would like to start raising chickens in the spring (2012). I am currently fixing two chicken coops and plan to have orpingtons in one and hope to have chanticleers in the other. I find them to be a beautiful breed and would hate to see them disappear. Could anyone tell me where I might be able to get some hatching eggs, chicks or chickens? I would appreciate any information and/or advice anyone can provide. The summers in Kentucky can be hot and humid.

I wonder if Klorinth is still watching this thread and what ever became of the survey.

I have some Partridge Chanteclers that I hope will be laying in a couple of months. I plan to hatch out a fair number, but would be happy to sell a few hatching eggs too. If you aren't anxious to get started now and don't find another source, let me know.
