Chantecler Thread!

I'm going to slaughter the last two Buckeyes tomorrow. In fact, they will be the LAST of this breed I ever expect to own. It's quite a nice breed but in my opinion, they are less desirable than the Chanteclers...by a mile.

We slaughtered another beautiful Chantecler cockerel this afternoon. He weighed 5.8 pounds and I hated to do the deed. He is very wide and hefty but he had a pea comb.

My biggest cockrel this year (from Cackle) also had a pea comb. Darn! He went to another farm, where they loved his size and didn't mind the comb. Mary

I just wonder if I should have ignored the pea comb and used him anyhow??? If I didn't have at least 3 equally nice cockerels with correct combs, I surely would have kept and used him!!!

Well, maybe you need to get some customers for your one offs. People are getting smart about wanting to get breeder quality birds and doing some selective breeding rather than paying out the nose for "show" quality.

It's difficult to sell these birds for what they're worth in WV but especially so since the best platform for such sales (West Virginia Market Bulletin) will not allow ads for any poultry at this time because of the avian flu scare. To my knowledge, not one case in this state!!!!

I decided after doing some reading, that introducing the pea comb would complicate things too much, and hope he does well in his new flock. I kept a smaller cockrel, and Candy got the other best boy. Mary

Hmmm, and interstate shipping can be complicated. But Chantecleer is one of the rarer breeds and needs help to be secured away from the brink. There's gotta be someone on BYC that can help get your breeder quality birds out there in the world.

I got the first two eggs from my Chantecler pullets this morning. Not saying it's the first they've produced, just the first to have dropped into the nest boxes. I will 'deploy' the wooden eggs this afternoon.
