Chantecler Thread!

Hey all!

I've just discovered Chanteclers and I'm afraid I'm hooked! I focus mainly on BBS Marans and Bielefelders, but I really like what I am hearing about Chanteclers (are they abbreviated as Chanties?). I'm in Central North Carolina where we do get hot in the summer (like occasionally pushing 100 degrees F). My coop is under tall trees with tons of ventilation and my girls free range for most of the day. Would the heat be too much for them? Any idea where I could get some partridge girls or perhaps a trio?

Thanks!

With the amenities and conditions you appear to have...they can do well enough, perhaps even thrive there. Ice water is good for many standard bred chickens in conditions you describe...no less good for Chanteclers. I have shaded houses too but I still have sprinklers going on the roofs on very hot days.

By the way, A very hot day here (in my part of WV) is 90* to 95* F.

Hi,
I am in western PA and starting in White Chanties this year sometime. I think what I will do on hotter days is put a couple of inches of water in a very shallow pool and put some gallons of frozen water blocks in it. I can just freeze gallon jugs in the freezer and let them wade thru the 2-3 inches of cool water.
Best,
Karen

I LIKE this idea very much! Thanks for sharing it - I'll be giving it a go as well!!

Hi there, I see you over on the Bielefelder site as well :)

I have white Chanties and they do not like heat at all. they are bred for cold weather for sure as they have very small waddles and combs. However, they fare better in the heat than my EE's who also have small waddles and combs because they are white. My EE's are darker feathered. In Central NC, they will need shade, cool water, and places where they wont have to run too much. The size of them are large birds and they will pant if having to run away from danger in summer weather.

Hi Candy442!

Yup, that's me on the Biels site as well! Thanks for the heads up on Chanties - I think they would do well in our situation as we have a large deck that all my girls love to hang out under. They would be in pretty heavy shade and another BYCer mentioned putting gallon ice hunks in a shallow pool for them. I think the Biels and the Chanties would look great together - so much texture to their patterns!

Our last single incubator egg hatched early this am...a beautiful pure Chante! Not sure if it's white or buff, I am thinking its a white though. First progeny of Walter. The chick has a sweet face so I am hoping a girl!

Here is our Chantecler baby that was hatched on Leap Day :) Not sure if a boy or a girl, but has the sweetest personality :). Taking a nap on me under the fuzzy blanket.
