Chantecler Thread!

Quote: Very good to know! I did not supplement my flock with light last winter until February, but that was only because I wanted fertile eggs to start picking up for Easter so I wouldnt have to buy any to color for the kids :) Most of my older flock ( 12 hens, misc breeds ) did not lay all winter, the only ones to give me eggs were my Barred Rock and Pekin duck. So to have a breed to can lay with out the extra electric on my bill will be great. So I'm crossing my fingers they will lay for this winter :) Being in Wisconsin and the Winter starting early and ending late it will be nice to have a breed that will work better for us. If they do well enough I may need to work on changing my flock over. Thanks for all the info I appreciate it !

Quote: Thank you for the info :) Age wise that will work out perfect for the butchering. They were born April 3rd so that will bring us to end fo Sept / begingin Oct, so the weather will be perfect. :)
and sounds average for laying. Very good !

Do you supplement light in the winter for laying ?
Hi Apyl! My hens didn't lay very well in the winter but my barred rocks were pretty dependable. But- my chanteclers did very well and I did not heat or supplement light at all either. That is why I love the chanteclers in Wisconsin. I only wish I could have hatched out more than I did. Here's to hoping we both have pullets

It seems as though Wisconsin is becoming awash with White Chanteclers.

I most likely will have pullets and possibly breeding trios this fall. We'll see what they look like as they mature.

Suncatcher, what breeds are you working with?

I am choosing the Partridge or Albertan Chantecler for much the same reason as your high altitude landrace. Cold hardiness and productive dispite the cold.

Welcome to the thread.

Well so much for having White Chantecler chicks :( I have been messaging the hatchery back and forth and they are thinking they sent me White Wyondotte or White Yokohamas. Sheesh why do chicks have to look alike lol. Oh well, at least I learned alot about Chanteclers and can work on getting some in the future.

Oh and here is one of the chicks in question.

Are they making it good?

They certainly should !
Its was nothing they did. The chicks were in a random batch of rare breeds I got in the package I bought. I thought they were Chantecler because I was told by a Chantecler owner they were so of course after looking on there site that was the only breed I could find with the characterisitics. I never say the White yokohama chick pics or white Wyondotte chick pics. so really it was my fault for listening and assuming. I dont mind though, Im happy with whatever breed since I dont show or breed.

Well, I promised I would post and I am! The white Chantecler chicks arrive from Fayrehale this morning. They were a day late despite Express shipping, but only one was DOA and the rest are still hale and hearty and settling in with my Houdan chicks. Jim was even kind enough to send a few extra! He was fantastic, and the chicks look great. :)
