Chantecler Thread!

Pics

Not only is this the best combed hen, she has many other nice features. She appears to be solid, with a well-rounded chest, and broad back. Her back is slightly sloped downwards, and no bunny tail. Her feathers are held to her body without much fluff. Overall, she is a pretty nice hen! But, I would plop her on a scale before breeding her, just to make sure she is heavy enough.

I think her comb may be beyond a no no cushion comb. It looks like a poor example of a pea comb.

His comb isn't really that bad for a PC. It would be much better to work with a male of good type, and a slightly wrinkled comb.

How to darken the line: Honestly, I'm not sure how easy that will be, considering you don't seem to have any dark birds in your line. If you want to keep a closed flock, then selecting yearly for the best birds would be your option. Otherwise, you could try to add some darker blood into your flock. But, color is only the exterior of the bird, so it is one of the least important things to worry about.

This is about how dark the standard calls for.

These are serious eye candy for those of us without any right now.

Keep them coming !

I would tend to be more forgiving to hens on color or combs, conformation, weight and then egg production are much more important to me, but, the rooster really is half of the flock so I am far more critical on them.

Very excited- after two very bad hatches, I finally have a white chantecler. She may be the only one to hatch, but at least she is here. Waiting on the rest....

I don't have any chantecler chickens, I'm just very glad their is a thread for this great Canadian heritage breed.

You will love them. Glad that James is brave enough to ship. It scares the bejeebers out of me.

Yes, I'm so thankful. Soooo many bad experiences with shipped eggs. It's always something—the weather, poor handling by the P.O., poor packaging, the power goes out, my incubator is terrible, etc. I love people that will just send me the babies. :)

Let us know how they arrive. It's so exciting! :) If you don't want to post it, could you just send me a private message????? pretty please?
On the radio this morning they were playing Christmas music. :-( Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! Winter Wonder Land, etc...
Blech.

About what age should I be able to tell who is a rooster out of my 4 White Chantecler chicks. I'm just curious :) I have a couple that look like their pinking up on their foreheads.

Nooooo don't say this. Haha I'm eagerly awaiting my first ever shipped eggs and hoping for good results. I do agree it's nice to have chicks or adults shipped though.

I think my location (Alaska) might have a bit to do with my bad luck with eggs. However, there is someone else in Alaska that went for the hatching eggs from Fayrehale and apparently had some luck!

Toofarout, it is threatening snow here today too after a streak of lovely weather. I'm sure it won't amount to much, but it's disheartening nonetheless. I will definitely post when they arrive. :)

I am not seeing the difference here. My birds look just like this picture as far as color. I could use an example of bunny tail.
Thank you for the overall go on these birds. I think the cock I had a pic of is pretty darn good for type... just not enough black in the chest. Plop her on a scale huh? I have yet to have a scale here, not even one for people. What's a good way to get a chicken to sit still on one of these? So... who has a darker bird they want to share?
