Chantecler Thread!

I've come to the same conclusion. I too looked up articles about comb genetics, and it looks like the pea comb issues would be much more difficult to manage. That nice big boy has to move on! I think he's healthy, just lower on the totem pole than some others. It's a rowdy group! Hellbender, your big cockrel might also bloom if the busier boys weren't out there with him, just like mine did this week. I'm going out to reevaluate my other boys this morning, and some will be leaving. Mary

Like I said, I have space and time. If and when any of them'move on', they will do so as capons. Still plenty of time for plan B.

EDIT:We used to operate a fairly large egg production operation here...that explains the 'space' angle. That miserable pain-in-the-butt operation is forever gone and I will never sell another egg.

Temperment is NUMBER ONE on my list!  Bad boys go to the freezer, no problem.  I'm moving the green legged girl on, the others have nice yellow legs. Mary

I agree temperment is #1 on my list also. The roo I have now is so calm but he has a pea comb. My first Chanty roo went to the freezer, you could not turn your back to him or he would be trying to get you.

Hello, I'm looking for breeding trios of both white and partridge chanteclers. I'm having trouble finding adult birds in the U.S. I thought someone on here might have a good recommendation. I won't be showing but am in a cold climate (michigan) and need correct combs. Thanks!

We breed White and Buff/White in the Lansing area. We will be offering chicks next spring, but no adult pairs available.

From what I understand, Mr. Blehm is not breeding Chanteclers (white anyway) any longer or took a break from them. He has Ameraucanas and I believe Buff Chanteclers.

If you get no satisfaction, let me know. I have several nice White cockerels and I only plan to keep two...have not made my selection and won't for about a month. I could easily sell a nice pair but would hate to let go of two of these pullets....but...I might be persuaded.

Not planning to feed as many birds this winter as last and I have about 20 Dark Cornish to sort through. I'm pleased with the conformation of these birds, even the lesser ones.

I have four nice Buckeye cockerels that I'm gonna' just butcher because no one around here knows anything about them (or any of my breeds) so I will just butcher these four Bucks and any other birds that I don't plan to use in my breeding program or don't sell.

He had Partridge - I purchased some chicks from him this year to breed back into some birds that originated from his line. I am not sure if he would have any breeding groups for sale or not.

You are right, I went to his page and he is taking orders for 2016 for Partridge or Buff :)

I'll keep you in mind, we'll only be 30 miles from there and I may be interested in chicks too. Can't wait!!
