Chantecler Thread!

No Chanty losses here so far and we have eagles, owls, hawks, bobcats, racoons, foxes, coyotes, skunks, deer and porcupines all visit the property.
I lost my best roo a week ago :hit
He got in a fight with my other roo through a fence. He came up lame. Despite 4 attempts to remove it, I think he died of bumblefoot. I culled the other roo on Wednesday. He was small, had too many tufts and the girls were afraid of him. He also appeared to be infertile. When we were processing him we found his testicles to be smaller than a pea.

two red males are young so hoping they darken up, Albert is 1 1/2 years old and only 6 1/2 lbs. I will soon see how Alberts 14 chicks fair.
In my experience, they don't darken. Sorry. I have had hens gain pencilling after a moult though, so who knows, maybe you'll be lucky. :idunno

The one I lost was to Marek's. None to predators yet, thankfully.

Good to know about the darkening, thanks. Not much for diverse stock here so I will likely breed him to get my numbers up. Not much culling this year with only 2 separate rooster lines

Bummer :( , three 20 week old Rhode Island Red cockerels going to freezer camp this week here.

Shubenacadie, 65 km outside of Halifax
Looking at the map, we drove right through there Monday afternoon! But I bet you could have guessed that given it is on the road from Sackville to Halifax. Would have waved in your general direction had I known. We are going to Halls Harbor on the Bay of Fundy this morning so will probably take the "back roads" returning to Sackville rather than drop all the way down to 102.

I went to St.FX.
Small world here on BYC! Another member went to Dalhousie. Just looked St. FX up as DD said Mt. A. is a "Maple League" university so I looked up what the other ones are. We'll be going right past Acadia in Wolfville, neither St. FX or Acadia has Japanese. She's already looked at Bishop's but there is no way to get Spanish, Japanese and ESL there with the way their courses are set up. So far Mt. A. looks promising.
