Chantecler Thread!

My older sister gifted me 15 chicks from Hoover Hatchery.

Partridge Chanteclers, straight run.

I am still stunned that you can't sex them by down color... ridiculous chicks.

They arrived the last week of May.

They are getting bossy now. And do NOT to integrate with my set of chicks that are 2 weeks younger.

2 weeks was still doable integration when I was breeding Spitz.

With this current run of hot weather my Chanteclers are doing just fine. I'm thinking small or no combs are great for not getting frost bite in the winter and large combs aren't the heat sink during the summer that chicken keepers think they are.

Just a wire divider between my Chantecler 2 month old chicks, and a mixed batch of chicks 2 weeks younger...

Chantecler STILL refuse to accept the white chicks in the younger batch.

A short update:

A few months ago they went into their first molt, which wasn't extremely dramatic, but I don't think they've quite finished yet even now. Fortunately it's been a mild winter so far.

A couple days ago one of the hens had some blood on and around her tail, related to molting I believe.

I was worried that the other hens were going to go after her, but to my surprise, they didn't peck at it at all. So I think we all got lucky on that front.

(I have a couple webcams on them all the time, so they're not just behaving when I'm around, if anyone was wondering.)

I am sorting out my Chant males of which I have 9; I will shortly cull 6.

The 1st Pic is Wilfred prime roo; then Elwood recent gene pool addition; then 7 of which I will keep 1, two sides of their cage; my ladies only run with some of 27.
