Chantecler Thread!

I do try to keep two Chantie boys and two EE bantam boys, but this time there was just too much drama, and the 'spares' had to move on elsewhere. :barnie

Sorry to hear you lost your roo. Interested in the necropsy report. Fortunately it rarely happens when one just drops dead but I'm always left scratching my head. Few years ago I sold 2 nice cockerals when my roo got taken out by a fox a couple days later! Luckily I had a few in the brooder.

Counted last night & we have fifteen spares in the roo pen. One of the things I expect is that the boys all get along; otherwise, yes, we too cannot keep a rangy tangy roo a doo.

When not set up for breeding pens, we keep the females in mobs without males & sell the eggs for consumption...this is last December; Chanteclers, Wyandottes and some of the Brahmas.

One cannot afford to have a single male; Murphy's Law is to have one chicken pass and that'd be the sole male. He's gonna be the one that rushes in towards danger while the kids and Moms go in the other direction.

I hope you have some fert eggs or access to a source for a new boy...are you able to track down where your extras have gone and ask if they can return the favour?

No fertile eggs, he's been unwell for a while, and hindsight is a wonderful thing; he wasn't breeding as enthusiastically as normal for a few weeks.
I have ten TSC 'pullets' of various breed types, all a month old, and at this point wouldn't mind if one or two turned into nice cockerels, just for this year, hoping to get some Chantie chicks later.
It's so quiet out there now...

Potentially, I guess...it is a good thing he never sired any birds. :(

Good plans to get some chicks. Thankful you are able to do that!

Yes, it would be ever so quiet and in our books, a flock is not a FLOCK without a proud (and often), quite LOUD male.

The boys are the real eye candy!! :thumbsup

I agree about not wanting his genetics here, also not so happy with a couple of his hatchmates, for other reasons. Not having a good experience with our small group of Chanties. Two hens have damaged hocks, not typical injuries here, One hen is a miserable biting wretch when she's in a nest box, not broody, just egg laying.
Better luck next time, I hope.
Mary
