The chicks are growing, but not enough to see what we have yet. We have some more eggs in the incubator of both the Buff LF and the Red bantams. We may consider allowing someone to help us with the Bantam project. My best educated guess is we will need to just cull heavy for type and an even color. Will know more as soon as they are fully feathered. We are using the best Buff Wyandotte male possible with our best female Buckeye. Both have won either best or reserve variety.

Our Ideal Red Chantecler LF are growing. Am looking forward to seeing their color and type. We may this fall mate the females to one of our Buckeye males. That would increase the size and darken the color. however, the color may be fine as it is. Will know more when they get feathered out.

We have now removed the Buff male in our large fowl pen and replaced with a Self-Blue (Lavender) project Orpington male. Some have said that they have gotten a black from a lav/buff cross. Hoping it works. We will be setting those eggs in a few days.

We lost our partridgeXbuff hen for a bit. She is setting. Not sure what we will set under her. We moved her this evening and will see if she stays broody a few days in her dark broody box. Have plced nest eggs under her. Can't afford to give her good eggs yet.

We have about abother 24 Buff LF chicks that hatched this week. All are cushion comb. So we have stopped that mating.

I recently lost my only chantecler hen to coyotes. I still have a rooster and would like to rehome him. I will try to get better pictures tomorrow. I live about an hour from Minneapolis/St Paul. If anyone is interested PM me. He's from Sandhill Preservation center and is 6 months old.

I don't usually ship birds. I have family to visit in Little Falls, but even if you met me in St Cloud you'd have to drive 2 hrs.

Are anybody's Buff Chantecler chicks from Ideal "overally" active?

25 little cuties arrived the second week of March, and promptly turned into little buff crazies. No they are not flighty, well actually they are flighty, they try and fly up on any thing and anyone.

I open their brooder/pen door and they crawl all over each other trying to get out so they can run around my office

They jump at the dogs through the chicken wire, they climb on my head, they are absolutely fearless! When one grabs a piece of paper/wood shaving/bug it sounds like a heard of elephants as they run from one end of their pen to the other chasing the lucky chick with its prize.

Today I had to remove one of the smaller chicks. No they are not mean to the little chick, they are running her over! She looked a bit dazed, but is getting on well with my Penedesenca chicks (who are flighty but also are not mean).

I don't remember last year's Chantecler chicks being so rambunctious and fearless - do you think they are "well"? Should I be worried?

Their pen has a heat bulb, food, water, two cat toy balls, and several twigs/wreaths for perching. They have chick grit, fresh air (well, as fresh as air in a home office can be with 25 chicks).

This is the first batch of chicks I've raised on Organic chick starter - could it have too much of something or not enough of something else?

We have our Buff Chanteclers in with several other breeds, including our Improvement project chicks and see no difference in their behaviour.

I have Partridge Chanteclers one week older then yours, (Not from Ideal) and they sound just like your buffs. They fear no one, as soon as you walk in they all freak out. It is a race to be pet, held, fed, and to perch on the person(s) entering. I never had a group of chicks so friendly. Mine seem very hardy/healthy. I do not feed organic feed. It just seems to be their personality.

I'm sure I should cull the little runts but they are absolutely adorable and look and act normal except for their size. Actually the second smallest one is the most outgoing of the group. The first one to try and push the door open, flap out, jump for my shoulders and generally get into trouble.

Can anybody with partridge Chants from Ideal tell me at what rate they matured?? Someone local here got a shipment of them, and we've had them about 3-4 weeks now, man are they TINY...Ideal doesn't list bantam Chants on their lists anywhere or we'd be inclined to think they were bantams....???
