Chase, capture or kill?

You need to remove the buffet for the hawk.Doing anything to a hawk should never be posted as it is illegal.Best wishes.Hope your hawk issue gets resolved.

It makes me chuckle to see those who post about killing and harassing birds of prey. They are protected for good reason. If they were not, everyone who had a flock of birds which were not protected well enough otherwise...or small dogs that roam all over freely, or cats, whatever...would be shooting them out of the sky to the point of extinction. Is that the legacy we want future generations to have? No wildlife left except in zoos because we have encroached on them to the point that they are the enemy and have to be eliminated from our little space on this planet.

Either accept that you WILL lose birds on occasion if you free range, or pen them securely enough to keep them safe from ALL predators. Do not blame a predator for taking an easy meal. It's like putting a buffet down in front of a fat kid. :p

Seems you're not familiar with the train of thought here at BYC. The more of them that are shot from the sky, the more of them will "spring" up mysteriously. That's how they claim it works with fox, coon, possom, you name it. I can't imagine why it wouldn't work with birds of prey.

Guys, am totally willling to lose a few since I do modified free range-- hello?! But am not gonna just sit there and let it take my birds... What is wrong with scaring it off WITHOUT harming it?
Is it illegal for your Roo to jump on it and ward it off? Or my giant schnauzer to bark at it and scare it off?!!! Where do we draw the line?

Take care of your problem and dont discuss it here. Sounds like you have a serious over population of hawks in your area.

Quote: What is "wrong" is it's ILLEGAL to harm OR HARASS a Raptor in any way

Your Rooster is an animal
Your dog is an animal
We "draw the line" at HUMANS, because they are supposed to know right from wrong.

Do what you want with the hawk, but don't complain if it costs you thousands of dollars, or you end up in jail, all because you won't safely confine your birds for a while

You have to do what works best for you and your situation, they are all different , like i use dogs and bottle rockets to keep all kinds of critters at bay other folks may just have to lock everything up when they are not around.

I know hawks are a real bad problem for many folks here but shooting them is a bad idea with the way folks live close to each other, i live on a large parcel of land but about 2/3's of a mile across the creek they developed a bunch of land into ranchets, i can hear guineas and chickens in the quite of night sometime so if them folks over there start shooting at hawks i could be on the recieving end of a bullit over here and that is not a good thing, nobody needs a hole in their roof or building or ones self, now the chance of that are slim but i have known it to happen.

blue jays don't "scare off" the hawk, though they can be downright vicious, especially if they have nestlings of their own. All predators like an easy meal with no risk and expending as little energy as possible. A site that has a flock of screaming jays (crows or even sparrows!) that alert the prey that a hawk is in the area isn't going to be as attractive to them as a place where they can sneak up on their dinner. Even adding in some good hiding spots for the chickens (raised pallets or even low-hanging shrubs) is often enough to keep your birds safe without resorting to actions that can send you to prison.

It's illegal to disturb or bother a hawk in ANY way. You can't scare them, chase them, shoo them, or in any active way interfere with their daily lives.

I feel for you as I too am having problems with hawks this year. Having a covered run or tractor for them is a must until it or they decide to move on. Even then, I wouldn't trust my birds out unless I was right there with them at all times. You said you just moved into this house? Find out why they are hanging around. Did the last owner feed them? Sounds stupid and also is against the law but it happens. Did they also have chickens and just let the raptors take them? This bird, from what you described isn't afraid of humans. It should be or at least wary enough to not want to be close to humans. Something is up with that and I would be contacting the Game Dept. for your area and let them know. Also tell them you cannot allow the loses to go on. You obviously have these birds for a reason, be it food, eggs, whatever, you also have rights under the same laws that protect the raptors. If you have taken every oppurtunity available to protect your birds and can prove this, they can and usually will remove the bird from the area. Wind chimes, old CD's hung from trees so they will flash with reflected light, pointing at the bird so it knows you are watching, sometimes help. Truthfully though, it sounds to me like something is/has gone on there to make this bird act this way.

Sorry I can't be more help.
