This is a terrible picture,

Right now their names are (in order of hatch),
12, My Precious, 7, horizontal, and Baby

I think 12 and 7 are both roosters, and the others girls.

I am TIRED, was up all night watching the incubator, 12 kept trying to eat his siblings, and baby was slow at hatching, and the temps on my incubator STILL don't stay stable.

At 5am there was more frantic peeping, saw that 12 was eating siblings again, that Baby had hatched, AND that the temp was up to 104!!!!!! (It had been 99 and 100 all night). So.....I had to make a spot for the Turkeys in the not quite redone coop, put the chicks where the turkeys had been (extra bathtub), and since I was already up and it was then getting to be 6, feed and let out the young chicks (2 months now I think).

OK, DS 2 is having a birthday today :D

Thanks Chicka, hard to give myself permission....but starting to give myself the "push"!
Yes, I'm sure I'll be burning up the phone lines with Mom and Vicky, the lady helping us out. $$$$ Need to see if Alaskan has any communication tips on cell phone/wifi stuff. I'm so not techy equipped/minded...

It's like leaving everything I know, but something I said I would do with DH, travel as much as we could. He was quite the world traveler, in his younger days....Rugby and family all over the states...country....

You need to call your cell phone provider and ask about coverage. Some have Alaska as part of the US, others don't. :lau.

As to Internet, the grocery store in town has WiFi, I can sit in the parking lot and use it. So, I don't think there will be much trouble getting wifi. The hotels I have stayed at in Anchorage have had wifi.

Oh, NO MORE terrible incubator, just realized I didn't mention, the five I took a picture of are all I am going to get, so the incubator is turned off, THANK THE LORD!!!

I really think that the four Black Copper Marans are one rooster and three hens! I am not going to hold my breath, but it is clear that I don't have four roosters! :D It would be so perfect to have one rooster and two or three hens!

#12 does look like a rooster, but he hatched from an olive egg. I have no interest in a Olive Egger rooster, so, if he does end up really being a rooster, I will first see if someone wants to buy him. He is so precocious and gorgeous, even as a chick, that I don't like the thought of eating him.

Did you get a new thermometer?? I can't remember if yours had fans etc. Love those names, heehee, they are certainly little miracles!

Thanks on the tips....better start looking into it. Had canceled the texting/email stuff long ago, but will check into that again...need to learn how to use that darn smart phone. (had it for a couple years, just a phone to me. heehee)

Thanks! The incubator 'has' a fan, but I wonder if it just makes noise, and doesn't push around air. Anyway, I am NOT messing with that again!! If I ever need to hatch again, I will either take several weeks to take the entire thing apart and see if I can fix it, or buy a new one. Blach! I am very very happy I don't have to deal with the incubator again!

As to your cell plan, I think that most plans let you upgrade to a bigger plan (lots of minutes and text, email, etc) on a month by month basis. I have done that before when going on vacation. I usually have a bare bones cheapest phone plan, then I upgrade for the cool stuff (like mapping) for the month I am gone).

Anyway, I sure do hope you have a great time! :D

I am in Arizona and not only is it 110 degrees most afternoons now but the bullhead ants are in full swing.and have invaded the 13 week old chicks coop. So tonight my husband has moved the chicks in wth the adults while they are asleep. We have done all the usual things to get rid of the ants with no luck. The adults coop has a large pen and they are let out to free range daily but I am really worried about the chicks reception even tho I know the ants were creatng pain for my little guys and maybe even death.

. In the morning wish us luck for the move to be a calm one. It is so weird to make our pens coyote and hawk proof and the enemy turns out to be 1/2 an inch long. Guess I had better go to bed after a couple long winded prayers. God must get awfully tired of my pestering about such things.

Hello! so glad I found this thread. While I find a breed thread very informative I haven't had a whole lot of fun reading it. So, I have found you people and am thrillled to have done so. I have 4 barred rock full sized hens that the neighbor added to my flock and 1 huge blue hen who is raising a banty chick she hatched. One japanese banty with one cochin baby she hatched and I have 5 cochin 13 week old cochin babes as that is the breed I am enterested in. These babes are developing mostly well and are fun friendly little 4 gals and 1 roo. I bought 6 cochin babies I thought but one started looking very odd so I thought it was a sultan but it hasn't quite grown right so counted its toes and it has 6 on one foot ans 8 on the other. Its a roo but has adopted 3 little guys that lost their mom and so has not been culled from my flock. I don't think you can have a chicken nuetered and he cannot be breeding but he is entertainment. Any way here I am
