Chat room for non religious poultry keepers! :D

Yeah, tons of foxes around here, but I don't see them on the property. And raccoons. Which I DO see. Occasionally. *something* made a mess of the garbage, and I doubt it was a fox.
We get a  strong odor around the coops for a day or three every several months. Google says that foxes can have similar odors to skunks. We've seen foxes in the fields, so thats our bet

Didn't know foxes were that bad either!

A few years ago in the city, a skunk 'let go' just outside my townhouse. I swear it must have sprayed the actual house! The smell was sooooooooo bad, it woke me in the middle of the night! I could not go back to sleep because of it, and it took a week to finally dissipate.

Oh, boy, skunks!

I don't remember the circumstance for why I did this, I think maybe I forgot something out in the yard? But one time when I was a kid I went out after dark in the rain with the family dog at the time, Blue. Well, Blue took off after something in the dark and ended up skunked, of course, so I brought him back to the house and I told him to sit and wait on the front porch so that I could go around back to open the gate and let him through to the back yard. Bear in mind, he normally would have been patient and waited like I told him to, but something about being skunked I guess makes you forget your training. Just as soon as the door was open a crack, Blue bulldozed his way past me into the house, covered in skunk and wet dog stank. The house smelled so bad for days. 😩

Blue went on to be skunked I think two or three more times over the years. He was not the brightest of bulbs, that one.

I also more recently had a family of skunks living under my coop and had no idea until one day I spotted one poking out from under there near dusk. Set up the live trap and caught her overnight, only to find out she had had a litter under there and her four little ones were now climbing around on the outside of the live trap. :th That was a fun day!

We apparently have tons of them around here because they're always getting hit on the roads around us and stinking the place up. Fortunately none have bothered my birds, although I suspect the family under the coop may have stolen a few eggs while they were here.

No experiences with foxes yet here, thank goodness for that!

Thankfully, I've never been directly skunked. Nor one of my pets. The time with the townhouse was bad enough. That stench was disgusting, and that was with all the windows closed!

It's funny/weird, I saw more wildlife going around in the city than I have out here! TONS of rabbits, the skunks, squirrels, chipmunks (one particular chipmunk would throw pinecones at you!), raccoons, etc. Out here, they all keep to themselves and rarely show themselves.

I remember our family dog got skunked as a kid too. I remember the tomato juice and whatever else concoction in the garage LOL

My dad pulled up a recipe for some kind of concoction that included hydrogen peroxide and I don't remember what else. No tomato juice in our case, though.

It's amazing how well skunk smell penetrates. We usually have our windows all closed at night, but if a skunk sprays anywhere nearby, not even on or around the house but out in the woods, you can smell it in the house anyway. :sick

I've never lived in the city, but we've got a ton of wildlife where I live! Just going out to feed the chickens in the morning, I often see rabbits, squirrels, robins, chipmunks, and deer. Often all in the same morning! There are raccoons that like to come out and play in my chickens' water dishes every night I forget to empty them at coop closing. And sitting here at my computer I've spotted various warblers and other songbirds hopping through the branches just outside the window right by my couch. :love
