Most of what I have hatching right now is just barnyard mix because this is my first year with an incubator, but I did buy some Cochin hatching eggs that are in there too. That solid black chick is a cross between a white Silkie rooster and a Brahma jersey giant cross.

Oooh, barnyard mixes are fun, too! What variety of Cochins did you get? :pop

Blue and Black silkied Cochin bantams, 12 hatched so far and 8 more due over the next two weekends. :fl I'm attempting to breed them toward the standard for Cochin bantams and just generally preserve the silkied variety as it became very scarce and hard to find for a while there. Aiming for about 100 hatched this year that I can pick the best out of to breed next year and sell the rest to help fund the project. But this is my first real go at it this year, so we'll see how well it all goes. 🙂

I had to share this--one of my ancient Easter-egger hens, Wynne, surprised me with an egg today! She'll be 12 years old on May 11!

Yeah, whenever I see someone ask when chickens stop laying, I have to chuckle. They kind of don't stop, not until they're quite advanced in age or have something else wrong with them! Wynne doesn't lay very frequently anymore, but she laid a whole 3 eggs last year! My oldest, Merlin at 13 years old, hasn't laid in a couple years to my knowledge, though, I think because she started showing symptoms of gout a few years back. My only 11 year old is definitely not laying anymore, either, because she can barely walk at this point. But the 10 year olds are laying fairly decently still considering their age, at least few eggs a month!
