Chat Thread for the New Crazy 24 hour Auction

I keep getting ready to list Brown leghorns and Isabel Leghorn eggs but then they will stop laying just before I get a 12 plus order

Good observations here, but I beg to differ on the highlighted point. There are many heritage breeds that are on the critically endangered or endangered list that were not imported by Greenfire Farms. Of course, many of those do not show up on these threads. As for Greenfire's breeds, you will most likely find much better quality from those who purchased from GFF and have done the hard work of improving the stock, rather than just hatching as many as they can and selling everything that hatches, regardless of quality. (Not a fan of GFF... can you tell?) Just because it seems that many people in the U.S. have them, does not necessarily disqualify them as rare. The numbers of many are still relatively low. Really good examples of the many imported breeds are still indeed rare.

Well said...

I agree with this. I will use Swedish flowers for example. I still consider them rare. You do not see them everywhere, but if you do a quick Google search you can turn up quite a few results, and even harder to find are good examples of the breed. Same thing with svart hona, ayam cemani, etc. They are rare still in my eyes, and even rarer in good quality.

Wording does play a big part in what makes a auction/sale but it's the product that counts.

Great points! Rare AND good quality is what's rare, lol... and honest ethical breeders... like many here... :)

Agreed seabrights polish and silver phinox are on the thretend list and I have all 3 mainly trying to get the numbers up rather then for show stock that can all be fixed over time.

It's mainly a semantics discussion. My point being that "rare" is overused (you just have to do a quick ebay search). In terms of any other item, "rare" carries a far less prolific distinction than we are inclined to use with poultry breeds.

In addition, when it comes to mixed breeds, "rare" should probably not be applied at all, unless it becomes a recognized, reproducible breed.

I pre fure to say exotic just because that's what they are. Rare is only mainly applied to chickens that you can hardly get a hold of like chinchilla grey silkies if I'm correct and im lucky enough to have a very nice breeding pair. That won't lay eggs
