Chat Thread for the New Crazy 24 hour Auction

Pics
Are you talking about the old barnyard mix auction or my current crazy egg auction having the one breed you don't want. I'm only asking because there might be others that feel the same way. Maybe I'll post another auction with just a couple of the breeds later on.

sort of but not you specifically.. though you do have some I was not wishing to have .... I am sort of lost on what is for auction and who is auctioning what atm.. just peeked at your barnyard mix one.. I'm not really into the frizzle things and not sold completely with the silkies either I like your other mix of birds ..though love to talk with you about your birds.. do the silkies have issues in our climate? what size are the mottled running? love to see a picture of your lavender a must have in my flock :) I've been trying to find some information on which orpington color is larger then the others? have found some referencing the bbs or jubilee's were larger...had thought the blacks and blues were

oh and PS: How long ago were you tested for AI and what sort of biosecurity are you using to protect your flock with the current issues we are having in wa state?

As far as I know there's only 2 auctions: mine (crazy fun mixed egg auction) and the Russian Orloff auction.

I only have 1 frizzle. Any eggs one was to hatch from her would have a 50% chance of being frizzle and 50% chance of being smooth. All would be large-fowl. As far as the Silkies go they do very well in our climate. I've been told they're prone to the cold, wet, etc and let me tell you, they're the first ones outside in the wind, rain, or cold and I've never had a problem with them. :) I only have 1 silkie laying at the moment so the auction will only include a couple eggs from that pen. My mottleds are HUGE. I haven't actually weighed them before but they're ginormous. They're huge gentle giants. I thought I had a pic of my lavender but I guess I don't; I"ll have to get one tomorrow after work! She's more of a medium to large size vs a HUGE size. Chocolates often are still on the smaller side but there are large fowl available. I'm not sure they're quite the 'large fowl' standard of other English Orpingtons though. Size is dependent on what lines you are looking at. Certain breeders breed for size over other qualities while others breed for temperament, color quality, etc and make size a lesser priority.

My flock was tested for AI at the end of November and, since I'm voluntarily part of the AI-free program, they all get tested every 90 days. As far as biosecurity goes: all of my pens are on lockdown. No one in or out and no free-ranging. Absolutely no visitors. All outdoor runs are covered. I have a separate pair of barn boots that ONLY get worn inside each pen. I carry them with me and set them inside the door to each pen and step into them from the outside. They also get bleached frequently.

Anyway, hope that answers your questions. Let me know if you have more. :) I'm off to bed; I have a long 12+ hour work day ahead of me tomorrow followed by chores when I get home. Have a good night!

yeah I have noticed most of the lavenders in well most of the breeds I have looked at tended on the smaller range...How long have you been working with your lines of chickens?...are your silkies friendly.. had spoke with some that mentioned their silkies were on the aggressive side.....so which are your favorite chicken and why? also what part of wa are you in? have you found particular problems with any of the breeds you have with our wet or cold n humid climate ? How do you select your breeder stock? are you selecting it from the breeders you have currently or do you source out for your birds? and if you are doing within your birds what are you breeding for temperament, size, color, pleasure? what have you come to expect from your birds in regards to egg production? broodiness? size? any genetic issues you have seen or things you have found you like in particular or even dislike about your birds? ohh where did your lines originate from? How old are the birds in your flock?...ugh 12 hours + sounds grueling... Hope it flys by for you and you find the chores swift and easy and fun...

I put lights in their coop to extend daylight hours. I could do other things (cayenne pepper, more light, etc) to force more eggs out of them but I don't want to cause then stress or physical harm. Some feel that lights are too much of a stressor. Stress could cause any number of health issues. As far as laying abilities, my Mottleds consistently lay 100% (5 out of 5), my layer flock lays about 75% (11 out of 14) and my silkies give me about 1-2 eggs per day. That's how I'd rank them in terms of ability.
