they were using it the first day.i left the old waterer in until the water was gone and they were all drinking from the new one by then.

they do look easy to make.
make them or buy them, all i know is it keeps everything dry and clean and it's alot easier to water my chickens.and they always have CLEAN water.

I also got the nipples from Neil and just poked a couple in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket. Easy peasy. Love them! No more poop in the water or messes. They're red so the birds start pecking at them right away and learn Hey, water comes out of that!

I poked a couple in a 1 gallon bucket to use in the brooder for the chicks too. SO much neater than the chick waterers.

i don't know.the only thing that has to move is the metel rod at the tip.maybe one of the cold weather experts can answer.since i live in georgia i don't have to worry too much about freezing but maybe 1-2 times a winter.

yes, much neater.i didn't mind watering twice a day but it just got so messy for the chickens to drink from.i live close to the guy that sells these so he delivered mine to me at no charge.if people can make these that is cool, better for people and chickens.if they can't make them, then this is the cheapest, best waterer to buy,IMO.

There's only one in the bottom of the jug, and I admit the plastic did begin to leak after about six months. Pretty easy to get another empty milk jug and make a new one, if that size was perfect. But I re-used the nipple in a harder plastic Rubbermaid half gallon juice pitcher. The kinda skinny ones that fit in the fridge door? Those. Easier to fill, too - simply lift the spout whatsit on its hinge and pour in more water. I did have to cut a bit of a notch in the lip where it would normally seal, to allow the air to enter. There has to be holes in the top or other venting, otherwise vacuum stops the water from coming out of the nipple. Forget to do that, and you'll have some frustrated and thirsty chickens!

I did learn about the vaccum.... when one bottle I'd done was all sucked in.

I will have to try that in maybe a veggie oil bottle, they are a little sturdier than milk jugs.
