Would there be any problem wrapping heat tape around the 5 gal bucket or pvc pipe line for winter?

I also got the nipples from Neil and just poked a couple in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket. Easy peasy. Love them! No more poop in the water or messes. They're red so the birds start pecking at them right away and learn Hey, water comes out of that!

I poked a couple in a 1 gallon bucket to use in the brooder for the chicks too. SO much neater than the chick waterers.

gryeyes, the one in the gallon milk jug, how did the nipples go in that one? I thought that the plastic might be too thin and it would leak.

Easier to fill, too - simply lift the spout whatsit on its hinge and pour in more water. I did have to cut a bit of a notch in the lip where it would normally seal, to allow the air to enter. There has to be holes in the top or other venting, otherwise vacuum stops the water from coming out of the nipple. Forget to do that, and you'll have some frustrated and thirsty chickens!

I did learn about the vaccum.... when one bottle I'd done was all sucked in.

I will have to try that in maybe a veggie oil bottle, they are a little sturdier than milk jugs.
