Hello! I have a question you all probably get often, regarding mice. There was a rodent problem when I bought this place, but I have a cat, and keep feed in metal bins. I thought I could starve them out. Not so, because now they eat my chickens feathersWe have such a vibrant community here at BYC... tons of active friendly members. Of course, life gets busy, so I was thinking it would be fun to start a thread welcoming some of our peeps we haven't heard from in a while.
If that's you, come say hello and let us know what you've been up to.
(if that's not you, feel free to invite peeps you haven't seen in a while and say hi to those that post here)
Get more cats. Since I have been having cats, (feral rescues) no mice problem here. I think, mice smell the cats, and do not set up shop. Same with rats.Hello! Not so, because now they eat my chickens feathersI have tried traps, ratX and now even a poison that doesn't have much of a second life(?) so I don't worry as much about a cat or chicken eating a dieing rodent..so: if I spray a solution of essential oils on their feathers, would that work? Please and thank you!

It is nice to hear from you!So... I'm five months late replying to this post, but here I am!
I did visit this thread when I got the invite, but I wanted to take my time writing my update. Well, five months later and I'm still short on time but we are trucking along rather nicely with our feathered friends.
I wanted to say a big thank you to those of you who set up this thread and made the effort to reach out to the members of Backyard Chickens who have been M.I.A. for awhile. I feel special to be a part of a community that really does care about it's members and their feathery flocks.![]()
I'm in the middle of writing an article that is not published here yet, but I can share it in it's draft format. You could try the deterrent method because if your place is like here, the mice are unlimited, and killing them doesn't do much good. This keeps them away.Hello! The joy of a flock that you enjoyI miss having a flock. We built our new coop and I'm actually getting 4 hens tonight!
Yes! Been busy, moved, added four new hens, trying to build a house! Then the hawk attack, just when the hens were living life chasing crickets in the fields. Always something!! Thanks for the articles on the “guard goose”. Truly think this hawk may have been deterred by some loud geese this morning. We have such a vibrant community here at BYC... tons of active friendly members. Just did this in May as well! We moved them at night and they did fantastic! Off the roost, into the car for 2 hour ride, quietly placed onto the new roost/coop at midnight. Slept like babies and awoke to new coop, never missed a beat in egg laying! So proud of them!!Hi, replying to just say hello to like minded chicken fans! We've been busy moving house (I can now give advice on how to move your chickens in the most calm, safe way when you move house, as managed it, was so pleased as I was SO stressed about it!). Chickens all settled in their new home and loving the fresh set of leaves to comb through for worms![]()
