I am in the final steps of securing the necessary permits and waivers to allow us to import peafowl from Thailand. The number of birds is not an issue. We have relationships in place to allow this to occur, and once we get the waivers, are going to be putting 1, if not more shipments together. These birds are coming from a well known Thai breeder, and will be coming via airplane from Bangkok to LA.

As I stated, I am posting here just to gauge interest. If there is none, that's great. If we need 20 birds, it can be accommodated.

Cheers!

PeaDaddy,,
What is the ( estimated ) cost to get them finially to AZ. ?? Or the total ready to ship to me in Missouri ? thanks George dba connerhills

Im sure you wont have any problem selling imported pure greens whatsoever PeaDaddy. Always glad to see new blood come in the U.S. and I really commend you on doing it. Im interested of course but doubt I could handle that big cost of imported birds. But Good luck with the venture. Check with Josh N. and Elton H. also before you do it. It may provide you with more backers for more birds.

Not sure you can import from Thailand, because of the Bird Flu scare years ago.
Very few places you can import birds from anymore, more than likely never from China again. If you can it is costly, as I have imported many pheasants years ago, and it has gone up quite a bit since then, especially large birds like peafowl.

Hi Alien. Long time no hear. Hope all your birds are well. Do you keep any greens or any peafowl now? Also I was just wondering what state you lived in.

The problems are the veterinarian rules. I know that bird exchanges between European Union and US are possible. But from Asian countries it is nearly impossible.
Since the bird flu the borders are nearly completely closed for pet birds.

I agree with destinduck. This is a really big task and you are great for doing it PeaDaddy. I also doubt I could handle that cost too but I would like to just know what it would be...I am in Florida so I guess that would be very costly.

. I hope everything goes well and I definately would be interested in buying some of the chicks from imported greens. I am guessing they will be Imperators? I would definately make a brand new pen and do all of the required stud book recording and everything just to have some pure greens. The idea of helping to conserve such a beautiful bird is such a dream. I really do wish you the best of luck and I am so excited about this! We definately need some pure imports here in the US. When you get the birds you just have to post tons of photos!!!

I agree with the others.
I think this would be a great investment to get pure and new bloodlines to the US.
I probably would not be able to afford the imported birds, but I would definitely buy their offspring.
But I would like to know how much each imported bird would approximately cost, and are they imperators?
Good luck with this venture and keep us updated!

Thanks for all of the interest. Let's cover the issues brought up in this thread:

1. The issues with the USDA are being addressed via waivers. The issues aren't with Thailand, they lie in the surrounding countries (Korea, Taiwan, Singapore). Our stateside contacts are working with people inside of the USDA to address these issues. These are people who have active working relationships with the USDA and we are confident that we will get the issues resolved. The talks have already progressed into which flights are candidates for travel for the birds (cargo vs passenger, airlines, layovers). Honestly, we think this is going to be one of the easier issues to overcome. We are still awaiting word as to whether a mandatory quarantine period will be required. If there is, we are prepared to cross that bridge.

2. Cost: We are estimating, very conservatively, $2000 for the pair imported into the US. This covers cost of the birds, shipping, and all fees associated with travel. This is an estimate only, but a very conservative one. Cost of shipping is going to depend on location. Figure $300-$500 for shipping to the East Coast/Fl. We have an extensive network of shippers that we will prefer to use because of the relationship, and the care of the animals. Obviously, the buyer can dictate shipping, but we're going to set it up so that the birds travel in the handbuilt crates that they will arrive in the US in, under supervision of the people we trust, and have working relationships with to ensure the highest percentages of a positive outcome.

3a. The largest cost of importing/exporting animals via the US is the cost of the inspector that travels with the animals to the tune of 175/hr. This is why whether we ship 1 or 50, the cost is the same. The care of the animals is their single highest priority. It's the reason these birds are going to be shipped in handbuilt wooden crates, paired, most likely, and not shipped in boxes or bags.

3. The birds are papered. There is a database in Thailand. Those papers will travel with the birds.

4. At this time, we have 2 different breeders on board. Because of the minor language barrier we have with our Thai client, we're still narrowing down what breeds are available. We are confident that both the Burmese and the Imperator peafowl are available. We also think that 1st or 2nd generation Java are available. I'll let you know more as I know more. The birds are yearling birds. Adults are available, as well. That said, our Thai client feels that he can find a better price for the birds, and will keep me updated as things develops.

So... As I hear more, I'll pass it along. I'm happy to answer questions, or find an answer for the ones that I can't.
