Chick adoption - Black Australorp???

Australorps are great birds, just not so great mamas. I actually chose them for the purpose that they very rarely will go broody.

Oh I'm happy to hear that! I usually stick with Easter Eggers, but one year I got a batch of beautiful Buff Orpingtons, and MAN! Those girls just wanna be mamas, lol! One of them is broody right now as a matter of fact. A couple of years ago four of them went broody at once, hatching a total of 8 chicks. I still have a lovely roo out of all that, but I don't need any more broodies! I want eeeggggssss.

One of my Buff Orpingtons literally went broody like 5 or 6 times one year 😂🤣 actually it was just between April and fall lol if she went broody again in the spring I was going to let her hatch but then I lost her to a hawk. :hit this was a few years ago now. I think she would have made a great mother.

Yeah mine made good mommies but that sure was a long dry spell with no eggs, pretty much that whole summer while they were brooding and then raising chicks then molting. I like them but won't have them again. Sorry you lost yours. I think we lost all the chick to hawks anyway, except that rooster, Silverwings. He's a good boy.

Oddly she was the only one that ever went broody so much lol one BO and one BA have gone broody like once or twice but never as much as her lol

I know what you mean! I have four buff Orpingtons and they are all about 4 1/2 years old. Every other month, two of them always go Broody and I’ve always broken them. One of my friends at school, had fertile eggs and she Gave them to me to place them underneath my two girls. We had seven hatch out of the nine and you cannot tell them that’s not their biological chicks! What’s so funny is, the two Mom’s are such great friends, they are sharing their mothering duties. It’s kind of a “yours mine and ours“ situation!

Awwwww that is sooooo adorable!!!! Mine are the same age, although Penny was only around two when she was taken. She even once went broody before she even hit a year old 😂🤣 but she was always so sweet and gentle and let me pick her up and put her in the broody buster no problem. And she would gently talk to me/coo in there. Even let me hold her. One time she sat in my lap for like forever. Just wanted to be held and petted lol she was such a good girl. My favorite. I think she would have made a fantastic mother too. :hit

I think the other is broody now or wanting to be but I’m not sure lol

Buff Orpington‘s have the sweetest disposition and they were really good Starter hens for me. I think these new babies Are Easter Egger mixes. At least that’s what my friend told me and they all hatched out of the prettiest light green eggs. I’m hoping they will be sweet as well

Of our 4 BOs that went broody, one was so fiercely protective of her eggs we had to block her off with a heavy cardboard wall so she could not even see the other mothers. One just kept to herself and was no problem, and the other two shared their eggs and nest, and raised their babies together! These had all just come into lay for the first time.

They really do!!! Although she was the sweetest out of the three that I had. I now have just one (lost one plus two other birds the other day) and a Lavender Orpington cockerel. I have lots of different breeds haha and awe those will be nice I bet!!! I love my Easter Eggers haha
