Chick Born with No Vent! What DO I do.

I agree. As long as a runt is eating and pooping and active, i hold out hope. Over time, they can catch up...and giving them a little extra scrambled egg treat on the side from time to time doesn't hurt a bit.

I would still give him/her some time. I don't know if there is such a thing as a premature chick, but you said she was small, she may just be underdeveloped.

As for the other topic raised, I think all the advice was from compasionate well meaning people. I find no offense in someone explaining the best way to end the life of a small suffering creature, and if it were me, I would like as much detail as possible so as not to mess it up and cause more pain than needed. If the poor chickie had truly been without a vent, that would have been the most likely and humane outcome.

I'm glad you waited a bit. I hope the vision resolves itself.

Blind chickens can do well too, don't write her off because she can't see. I traded some birds last year with another BYC'er, and we didn't realize it at the time, but one of the chicks we took was completely blind in one eye, and mostly blind in her other eye. But she got around just fine. She listened to the other birds when food was being given, and as long as the feeder and waterer were in the same place each day, she made her way to them just fine, and if they were moved, she had a buddy that would lead her out to the feeder and waterer. She even foraged well, she used her ears to hear, and listened for the sound of bugs in the grass. She did pass away, but not from her vision loss. She was a wonderful little bird while we had her, and the light of my older daughter's life. She adored that bird. She was a Golden Laced Wyandotte, her name was Goldie.​

I agree, I have one that can't see all that well. When she was just 2 days old I noticed that she was running into things a lot. Now she is 2 years old and still runs into things on occasion and can't see at all at night, but she is happy and just follows along with the head roo. He looks after her I think. But she lays eggs everyday and has a happy life!

Well, I can pretty much touch her face without her running off. She runs into the walls of the brooder, and stumbles around all the time​
