that's what i'm thinking, i just cleaned out their food and waters completely, and replaced as much of the bedding as possible, it's 10pm here and pouring rain, can't really go out and disinfect the cage until tomorrow.

just have to watch the others and pull them out immediately if they look sick...

Im so sorry for the difficulties that you went thru and the losses that you suffered, i hope none of the babies suffered too much, and that passing was swift as possible. The one recommendation i would deff. make is to sterilize that incubator very well, clean it well with chlorine in the solution. to sterilze the fan motor, wafer etc that are hard to clean effectively, i put a pan of clorine in the incubator and close it up and let the chlorine fumes penetrate everything for a couple of days, do not run it durring that time. After that, open it up and let it air out for a few days. Im really hoping that none of your probs are viral or bacterial in nature. Best of luck with future hatches.

does anyone know of a good book on chicken illnesses/diseases? i'm interested in getting one now, since i'm a vet tech student, i'd like to learn more about this stuff as well as dogs and cats, maybe i'll have a better chance of saving them in the future if i have something i can use to diagnose it...

I'm so sorry about Mr. Poopy I was really hoping he would pull through since you were able to help him start moving things a little bit. Definately clean everything well and I would put some electrolytes in the water to help give a boost to the ones that are still left in case they were exposed to something. Good luck and keep up posted on how the babies are doing.

been giving mine vanilla yogurt. I mix drops of vegetable oil or mineral oil into about a tablespoon of the yogurt and this seems to help alot. I do this about twice a day when she gets blocked up... piles of dark green poop but the white excrement still drips down her backside, maybe too much oil?... When I know she isn't drinking anything I mix up electrolyte solution and drop onto the top of her beak until it drips down and I watch for her to swallow. This seems to work well, but a little tedious. The heat really seems to take it's toll (many 90 degree days). She's probably the runt and may not ever be completely healthy. What am I to do?!

If it's helpful, in the "Baytril for Birds" page on the website linked in my sig below, I have instructions on how to give liquids directly down a chicken's throat. That might help you really get more in her.
But it might be pretty tricky fitting down a little chick's throat, though. If you do it, I'd definitely only use a 1 cc size syrings or a narrow eyedropper.
I think Vent Gleet might be something that would cause leaking like your chick has. You might also try doing a Search for info on that??

Im sorry for your loss...Pine shavings r fone for chicks--cedars not...I wish I had mor information to help you...but I feel your lose....if I can help you.send me and email me..I know whal you are feeling...Im sorry.

I use pine shavings but I make sure it's the larger ones not the fine grained ones. They can't eat much of it due to size. A tarp works too though if you want to not use shavings. They are too little to tear up a heavy duty tarp. It's messier with poop that way though but gotta do what you gotta do and you can always spray the tarp off with water and reuse it later.
