chick closed eyes chirping constantly RIP

I find it interesting that several of you say your polish will sleep standing up. The only time mine have done that is when they are not warm enough and appear to be trying to stay nearer the over head heat source.

For those of you with chicks that sleep standing up, is your heat source over head or to the side of the brooder? Sorry to temporarily hijack the thread.

Hi, my temp in the brooder is 85, with 2 lamps and a towel over the top. They sleep standing or laying down. I'm sure its plenty warm.
But there might be a point there with the sick chick, she stands all the time, and tonight I have caught her sleeping on the shavings like the rest. Maybe she was cold.

Mine get very vocal if they are cold. But it still doesn't explain the panting. Mystery for sure. Hoping tomorrow that you can't tell her from the rest of the chicks.

Mine does that too!

My chick is constantly chirping while standing up and closing its eyes. I tried to feed him by hand but he refuses. I tried to dip his beak into the water but nothing. I carried him and let him sleep in my hand but it only helped a little. But, when I turn on the heat light in the brooder, he shut up. Then, everything's back to normal(at least)

Good luck!

I guess I can increase the temp, its 85 now, but the others are very comfortable. The gasping chick is acting more normal, she is now huddling with the rest. I see her eat and drink. She does the gasping after she eats or drinks, or I pick her up.
I am giving her penicillin right now. I plan on going to the pigeon feed store near me and see what kind of meds they have.
Today is day 5/6, every day more gives me hope.

Chick looks real good today, in fact, last night I had to put a dot on her with a magic marker so I can tell her from the rest! I think I'll give her the penicillin for a day or two more.
Someone on this board said that if they make it to day 5, they will probably be okay. Today is day 7. She's a special chick.-Karen

Great news! So glad to hear the chick is improving so quickly. Must be a girl....right???

I'm hoping its a girl, but I guess it doesn't matter. But a girl would be nice. Any suggestions on a name, a Polish/slav etc. name.
