Chick comb conundrum

with it being hatchery stock, it is best to assume it is hatchery quality stock throwing faults- this is a sebright with a single comb. Silkies with pink skin, no leg feathering, 4 toes etc are not that uncommon, for example.

Thank you, I am quite certain that you are correct. After doing a bit more research, this bird has virtually everything that one would expect from a sebright except for the comb. While it really isn't a big deal for me as I do not intend to breed/show/sell, I was a bit thrown by this development.

Yeah unfortunately surprises related to hatchery stock is all too common. Marans that lay a light brown eggs, birds disqualified from chicken shows, contributing to massive confusion about Araucana/Ameraucana/Easter egger and so on.

the good thing is hatchery stock can be generally better layers than show stock.. purely a general statement though! and hatcheries continue to be excellent introduction to the poultry hobby.

just noticed your avatar! Chicken lady! LOL KITH was a great show.

Okay, one more question, and perhaps this is wishful thinking, but is it possible that one of them is a cockerel and one of them a pullet and I am just not able to see the comb well enough on the girl yet? I should also mention that in addition to being very single-looking, the comb on this one is also much more yellow than the other's comb.

Edited to add: KITH is one of my favorites.

I got a slightly better pic of the two today. What are the odds that the one on the right is NOT a cockerel? :(

I have 8 of those chicks in the picture and some of them have single combs and some have the rose comb. I also have a pair of silver seabrights. One has a single comb and the other has a rose comb. Someone told me the ones with the rose come are the only "true" seabrights and ones with the single comb are either a mix breed or a variety of a laced Wyandotte.
