Now.. Dont get me wrong, I love chick days! BUT!!!!
Please just listen to me when Im asking questions!

I called up there before I made the 10 mile drive to make sure they had some kind of selection (the last 3x ive been in there it was only 1 bin with maybe 8 chicks of the red st. run)
'Hi, yes I was wondering if you had a variety of chicks or if yall are expecting a shipment soon'
'Yes there are a few bins'
'Yes, but are they of the red varieties or do you have anything else?'
'There are st. run and we have pullets'
'Yes, but Im not talking about male and female, I get that, Im asking if you have anything other than reds'
'We have pullets which are all females'
'Ok, but, do you have anything other than reds'
'Yes we have st. runs which are males and females'

Then as nice as I could be I said:
'Ok, thanks!'

Was she serious?

it seems it would have been easier to say "i really don't know much about chicks" and then for her to try to see if another worker did know...

I just LOVE conversations like that!!! It's so much fun when you know it's going nowhere really fast

You're lucky though. Pretty much all our TSC stores get are the "mixed reds" and some pullets. I have to go about an hour away if I want to Possibly find a different variety. I normally don't get chicks from them anyway, but that's not the point

. Maybe I would if they had different breeds...

Well if it makes you feel any better my TSC is not all that bright either. Mine's 30 miles away, so I always call and try to decide if the drive is worth it.

One of the times I called I asked what they had and got told "well you know, the reds in straight runs of pullets, and banshees too." I smacked myself on the head, drew in a breath, prepared my corrections in my head, and sighed, "Ok. Thanks. Bye."

Some people! Needless to say I did not make the drive on that particular day.

...and you know when she hung up she turned to her co worker and said,"gee whiz, that woman knows nothing about chickens!"

It is good to see you posting again. I was concerned that something happened.

In my local feed store last year, they DO get a selection. Even the lady manager that is fairly knowledgeable, is not too.

I didnt buy any at the time, had enuff going on but was delighted to see they had buff brahmas and silkies and several others in the bantam bin. I commented as I checked out to the clerk, "wow, you have some silkies, thats nice to see.

The manager overheard me, and interjected.."Those are all bantams!". I said "Yea, in the bantam bin, there are some silkies and brahma's". She told me, "NO, they are not, they are ALL BANTAMS!" as if I were a very slow child. I finally said..."okaaaaaaay"

My conversation last year with a Big R employee...

"Have your ducks come in yet?"

"Yes, they just got here."

"What breeds do you have?"

"Yellow ones."

I ended up with a Rouen...and for the record those are black and yellow...not just yellow.

the one neer us is the same...

i was up there on weds, all the sighns were like "chicks are here", "veriety of breeds" blah blah
so im there and take a look...2 bins or reds, 1 bin of amber links...yup thats a veriety...

i had a rather similar conversation with the guy stationed in the chick area about if there geting any other breeds in...
it took 10 minutes of a conversation much like the one you had and me trying to tell him that "straight run" and "pullets" are NOT 2 different breeds...*sigh* i asked for a manager who seemed to have more of a clue and was told they only get the production birds in, if you want any "fancy" breeds you have to special order...oh and its a minimum of 25...*sigh*
i took a look at thier order form, just to see...and wasnt impressed at the selection either...

i will say however that the not knowledgable guy was VERY good at selling unnessicary stuff to new chicken owners who hadnt done their reaserch first...a 10 gallon feeder to go in the "brooder" because chicks eat alot and thier 6 new babies would go through a 50lb bag in 2 weeks....*blink blink*
then a huge metal trough because the box they had wouldnt be big enough for the 10 gallon feeder, 2 50lb bags of started because they need it for the first 6 months and this way they wouldnt have to come back, not to mention the additional packs of antibiotics that you HAVE to put in the water or they will all die...

im there with a bag of starter, a small feeder and waterer and a bag of shavings...
the poor family ask why they cant use the smaller stuff...and he tells them "oh she must be raising quail, there tiny...

they looked so bewildered so after the guy had wandered off i took them aside talked to them a bit, figured out what they had and what they wanted, i explained that the big feeders are great once the chicks are grown and outside but they dont need one in the brooder, and generally helped them get set up...

sad part is...in all the selling this guy did, not once did he mention a heat lamp for the brooder...they had a box full of 6, day old chicks and he hadnt even bothered to ask them if they had a heat lamp! *sigh*

sad part is, after seeing their prices, ill still return time after time to TSC...its actually worth the 20 minute drive for me just for the savings!
