Chick disease?? Help need input.

Thanks... when you talk about putting sugar in there water.. how much? i would be willing to try anything. I already put a couple vitamins? Thanks for everyones kind words and help

I'm thinking it is too hot for them. Do they have a place to get out of the heat? A cool end, and a warm end? They will go to where they are comfortable. My new ones do not like 90. They are out in open side where it is 85 or 80 .... they go back and forth.

good luck.

My brooder is pretty big. Its got 2 heat lamps one on each side. So it is not as hot in the center of the brooder. Thats where the food and water is too so that they do not stay so exposed to the heat.

be careful about overdoing the vitamins and electrolights and such too...

i hope the rest of your little guys make it okay.. i LOVE seabrights.. i want to get some one of these days...

I am terribly sorry you are going through this. My first batch I lost one a day for the first 5 days and 7 more over the next few weeks. My point is it has happened to a lot of us. It sounds like you are doing a lot right. Concentrate on that and forgive yourself. Your babies were in transit for 2 days without food or water! And they are stressed! That is not your fault. Additionally I read on www.mypetchicken.com about Sebrights "The chicks have a reputation for being delicate and difficult to rear because theyare so tiny and delicate."

Have you posted in Emergencies / Diseases / Injuries? Perhaps someone there has had a similar experience and can offer some advice.

Godspeed,
Laura

Lets try to get back to the basics and see if we can figure what is going on here. First I would turn off one of the heat lamps. Sounds too hot. Do you have a thermometer in the cage on the floor? The temp a few inches away from the main beam of the bulb should be 85-90 degrees. They should be able to go closer to the light to warm up AND have the option to get away from the light to cool off. Make sure the food and water is in the mid range temp area part of the cage. They will not eat if too hot.

They are too old for sugar water. That should only be used one when they arrive in the mail. Give them only fresh water and medicated chick starter. Electrolytes and vitamins are not needed. 99 in the brooder is too high.

Are they eating and drinking? What do their poops look like?

Please post answers and we'll get you back on the right track.

Do they have a way to get away from the heated area if they feel to warm? Mine usually like it a tad cooler. I would give some poli vi sol with out iron. Be sure they drink water and eat. That is about all you can really do. Be sure the food and bedding isn't moldy. Maybe even switch foods? Could be a bad batch.
