Chick Failing to Thrive Now Seems Frankly Ill - Hunched, Shivering, Thin, Miserable

Wow, that was a good post. :hugs I really feel for you because I am the same way and I try to save all of them too. :hugs

Sometimes Corid will work, sometimes it won't. It's so hard to know what's making them sick, so we do the best that we can with whatever we can get our hands on.

Keeping her inside with the others is fine as long as they don't trample her, and treating them with Corid is safe even if they aren't sick.

Very touching post. :hugs
The beauty of BYC (well, one of the beauties) is that there is a very wide range of thinking here and experience that gets freely shared. Usually there isn’t much judgement, if you are a “run to the vet” type, a “try anything and everything yourself” type, or even the “let nature take its course” type. We all have our own reasonings, and most are happily accepted here.

I had a group of chicks last spring and noticed one acting like yours. I treated them all with Corid and a few still died. But the stronger ones recovered and lived. So whether any treatment works or not, we all hope for the best.

Read thru this thread and I am so sorry to hear about your sweet chick :(. Thank you for putting into words what I have always felt and have a hard time explaining to my husband. "They're chickens" is his answer to most of my fussing. It's so difficult to see them suffering, and I'm sending healing energy to your chick and hugs from Michigan to you.

Oh! I forgot the question about her crop! It feels... Like it were full of well-mixed grape jelly. It is About half full, I would say. She continues to pick at her feed, but rejects the treats that I have offered her. She also will take a little bit of water, but only if I put it right under her face. She seems to forget that she's thirsty unless I remind her. Does the squishy crop constitute a bad omen? It doesn't feel substantially different then a normal crop, in my experience, except that there is no particulate matter inside that I can find. It seems to be entirely some sort of thick fluid.

Ok! I am finally home with the Corrid, and ready to administer it. Two feed stores were out! Can you imagine? Well, after the ridiculous fuss I made, driven by frustration, borrowed car deadline, and a rising fear that our recently tightened restrictions on medications would render amprolium forever unavailable, without a permission slip, (I can work up a good head of steam pretty readilly on THAT topic), I bet that those two shops will never again allow themselves to fail to reorder in a timely fashion. At any rate, I bought the cheaper (more financially conservative) choice, the 9.6% liquid. I truly would love to give her a great, whopping dose up front, to get the ball rolling like a deadly juggernaut through her battered insides, to crush those loathsome Invaders, leaving their pathetic, broken little oocites to be shat upon the ground, with satisfying, greasy little "splats!" by my ever-improving Chick! I think you said you could instruct me in the recipe? I would be extremely thankful!

In case noone else gets to reply tonight, I believe you can give a couple of drops undiluted to start, followed by 2 teaspoonsful per gallon of water for 5 days - this is the severe outbreak dosage. No other water can be available to them at this time.

Can you re-check the crop first thing in the morning before she eats/drinks and let us know how it feels?

Give her a direct oral drench of liquid Corid at 0.10 ml per pound of body weight for 3 days. This is in addition to the mixed Corid solution of 2 teaspoons Corid liquid per gallon of water.
